Zitat

We worked 16–18 hour shifts producing the first versions of the Falcon 9 thrusters.

To this day, it is still the hardest manufacturing assignment I have ever been asked to run.

We ran the first prototype thrusters in South Bend, IN. I still remember source inspectors coming on-site, finding the smallest cosmetic blemish, and denying payment on the entire product run.

That kind of pressure is what most people never see.

SpaceX did not become what they are today by luck or hype. They became it through manufacturing hardship, brutal design iterations, tight tolerances, failed attempts, rework, and people on the shop floor grinding through problems most will never hear about.

SpaceX is not just an engineering success story.

It is a manufacturing success story.

A true innovative masterpiece built through pressure, persistence, and relentless improvement ( late night calls with the engineering team )

I attest to their achievements.

Good job @SpaceX

#713 RE: Starfall Antworten

Zitat
TheNewPhysics@CharlesMullins2
🚨 SPACEX IS ABOUT TO TEST A RADICALLY DIFFERENT KIND OF SPACECRAFT AND IT COULD UPEND THE ENTIRE ORBITAL MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY.

On Tuesday, SpaceX plans to fly the first prototype of Starfall, a flat, disk-shaped reentry capsule designed to return up to 1,000 kilograms of cargo from orbit in a single flight.

That’s roughly 30 times more payload capacity than current commercial return vehicles (like those from Varda Space Industries). It’s not a scaled-down Dragon it’s a completely different approach: no onboard deorbit engine, a wide flat disk geometry, and Starlink terminals mounted to maintain communication through the plasma blackout during reentry.

Why this matters:

• Current orbital manufacturing companies are limited to returning only dozens of kilograms per mission
• Starfall’s design could make large-scale commercial production in space economically viable for the first time
• SpaceX would be directly competing with companies (like Varda) that currently pay SpaceX to launch their capsules
• Successfully testing Starlink through reentry plasma would be a major technical win with applications across SpaceX’s vehicles

The deeper implication:

SpaceX is quietly expanding its vertical integration.

They already dominate launch. Now they’re moving into the return leg of the orbital manufacturing supply chain the part that has been the biggest bottleneck for companies trying to make products in microgravity and bring them back to Earth.

If Starfall works at scale, it doesn’t just give SpaceX another revenue stream. It gives them significant control over the economics of an entire emerging industry. The disk shape and high-capacity design suggest they’re thinking about high-cadence, lower-cost returns rather than the traditional high-value, low-volume approach.

This is classic SpaceX: take an existing problem (expensive, low-capacity return from orbit), apply first-principles thinking to the vehicle design, and try to make it dramatically cheaper and higher volume.

How do you think this move into orbital return changes the competitive landscape for companies trying to build businesses in space manufacturing?

Zitat

Shanaka Anslem Perera ⚡@shanaka86
Elon Musk just named it. Starmind. One million AI satellites, each a flying data center wider than a 747, cooled by panels that glow their heat into the void.

This is not Starlink. Starlink moves internet. Starmind moves thought. Each satellite, the AI1, carries 150 kilowatts of compute on a 70-meter span of solar cells, runs the model on board, and beams the answer down. No building, no grid, no water.

The reason is in SpaceX's own IPO filing. The AI market it values at 26.5 trillion dollars hits a wall of electricity and water that Earth cannot supply at a sane price. Orbit erases both. The sun never sets up there, and a 147-year-old law does the cooling: in a vacuum, heat escapes only as infrared, so a panel facing the 3-kelvin void radiates it straight out, no water touched. Run that panel hotter and it sheds heat 16 times faster for double the temperature. What Earth data centers burn rivers to do, a glowing wing does for nothing.

Musk flagged the problem himself, in the same filing. SpaceX cannot get enough chips to build this yet, and the fab meant to fix that, Terafab, ten times the size of Tesla's Austin gigafactory, may fail. The prototypes do not fly until 2027. Astronomers are already in revolt over a million new lights crossing the sky.

Days ago, Masayoshi Son, who owns the whole AI stack on the ground, called space data centers pointless. Musk just named his and put a million of them on the drawing board. One man is reading his balance sheet. The other is betting on the laws of physics.

The piece works out which one the void rewards.

Published 1 hour ago, on June 23, 2026| By Gene

Elon Musk confirmed that Starmind will be the official name of SpaceX’s planned AI satellite constellation, following a trademark filing by xAI that surfaced earlier this week. Starmind is what’s being described to the FCC as a constellation of up to one million AI satellites

It’s worth noting that SpaceX’s Starlink communication satellite and Starmind are built on the same orbital infrastructure concept but serve entirely different purposes. Starlink is a connectivity network, with satellites receiving and relaying data between points on Earth, and functioning as a high-speed internet backbone in space. The satellites themselves do not process or think, and move information from one place to another, the same function a fiber cable performs underground.

Starmind, on the other hand, is something completely different, and tather than moving data, its satellites would compute data through artificial intelligence and directly in orbit using onboard processors powered by large solar arrays. Where a Starlink satellite is essentially a very fast pipe, a Starmind satellite is a server. The practical implication is that Starmind would allow AI models to run inference, process queries, and generate outputs from space, then beam results down to users anywhere on Earth within milliseconds, and without the data ever needing to travel to a terrestrial data center.

Starship will be able to carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch, delivering the equivalent of dozens of server racks per flight, with no land acquisition, no power grid approval, and no cooling infrastructure required on the ground.

SpaceX is pursuing this new technology as terrestrial data centers are running into hard limits such as lack of physical space, community opposition, and power and water consumption at a scale that is increasingly difficult to permit. Space has unlimited solar power, natural vacuum cooling, and no zoning boards. Musk said in a June 8 video presentation that he expects space to become the lowest-cost location to deploy AI compute within two to three years. Two AI1 prototypes are scheduled to launch in early 2027, with volume production targeted for the end of that year at a new facility called Gigasat.

The real world applications Starmind enables extend well beyond powering Grok. A constellation of orbiting AI processors could run inference workloads for any paying customer, anywhere on Earth, with latency measured in milliseconds rather than the seconds associated with ground-based cloud routing across continents. Starmind, if it scales as described, would make SpaceX the landlord of AI compute the same way Starlink made it the landlord of satellite internet.

Zitat

Zitat
Race@multiplanet1
Elon Musk was asked if he believes in God. His answer took longer than anyone expected and it didn't land where the audience thought it would.

Most billionaires dodge this question. They give a diplomatic answer to avoid conflict. Musk didn't dodge it.

He said he agrees with the idea of a creator. That when he looks at the physics of the universe, the precision of the constants, the mathematical elegance of how everything holds together, it seems unlikely that it's all random.

But he didn't stop there.

He said he wasn't sure the creator is the version described in any particular religious text. That the universe itself might be the closest thing to God that he can understand. That the act of making life multi-planetary is, in his view, a way of honoring whatever force created consciousness by making sure consciousness survives.

He basically described his life's work as a spiritual mission without ever using the word spiritual.

Building rockets to Mars isn't just engineering to him. It's an answer to a question about whether the universe created intelligent life only to watch it die on one planet. He said that felt like a waste. Like the universe wouldn't bother creating consciousness if it was meant to end on one rock.

So his answer to "do you believe in God" was essentially: I believe something created all of this. And I think the appropriate response to that creation is to protect it by spreading it as far as possible.

That's not atheism. It's not traditional religion. It's a man who looked at the stars and decided the most reverent thing he could do was make sure we reach them.

Zur Beantwortung der Eingangsfrage.

Bozwy 🕊️@bozwy

Elon hielt inne.

Happy Birthday Elon 🚀💪🔥

The world's first commercially built nuclear-powered satellite has reached orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The BOHR (Betavoltaic Orbital High-Reliability) satellite, built by Florida-based company City Labs, launched to space early this morning (July 7) on SpaceX's Transporter-17 rideshare mission.

Transporter-17's Falcon 9 rocket, which was carrying a total of 81 payloads, lifted off early this morning from the SpaceX pad at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, and began delivering its payloads to their various orbits about 50 minutes later.

BOHR is a novel cubesat demonstration mission from City Labs, which is testing out its proprietary "NanoTritium" betavoltaic micropower source in space for the first time. Similar to how spacecraft like NASA's Voyager probes' radioisotope thermoelectric generators produce power from the heat emitted from their plutonium cores, City Lab's NanoTritium device harnesses the beta particles emitted from the radioactive decay of tritium, which can be converted directly to electricity using a semiconductor.

BOHR is designed as a pathfinder mission to test the feasibility of City Labs' new technology, which is meant to provide continuous power to spacecraft without a reliance on solar energy. Though its tritium core isn't actually BOHR's power source — the cubesat is still dependent on solar power for general operations — City Labs' technology could help introduce new vehicles capable of exploring places that current spacecraft can't operate for long periods of time, like permanently shadowed regions at the moon's poles.

"City Labs’ BOHR arrives as the first commercial answer to that challenge," the company said in a statement. Though the cubesat's NanoTritium power source cannot produce nearly enough energy to power something like a moon base, City Labs sees its application scaling to eventually be able to do so.

One benefit of using tritium as the basis for a power system is the low radiation levels it emits. "City Labs’ tritium-based power systems… are engineered for safe handling, transportation, and integration within standard commercial launch environments," the company stated.

Translated from French
A month ago, on the heels of SpaceX's IPO, I published an analysis explaining why this company would be worth 30 to 50 trillion dollars within five years. Thirty million views, and quite a few people telling me I'd lost my mind. Elon had RT'd me.

Yesterday, Elon Musk wrote that SpaceX will be worth more than the rest of Earth if its goals are achieved. "More than the rest of Earth." Everyone saw it as a provocation. I see it as a theorem. Let me demonstrate it.

Let's pose the problem. Total global wealth, everything eight billion humans own—real estate, stocks, factories, gold—weighs in at about 500 trillion dollars. Saying one company will be worth more than all that combined seems arithmetically absurd. And it is. In a closed system. Musk's phrase says just one thing, and it's the most important of the century: the system is opening up.

Let's grant the degrowthers their one valid point: infinite growth is impossible in a finite world. Their error isn't logical; it's geographical. They thought the world ended at Earth. But Earth represents 0.0003% of the solar system's mass and intercepts one half-billionth of the Sun's energy. We're squabbling over crumbs at the foot of a buffet no one's opened yet. Open it, and hypergrowth stops being a slogan and becomes a physical trajectory again.

A. For ten thousand years, wealth has followed a single variable: the amount of energy and matter that humans know how to capture and organize. Fire, agriculture, coal, oil, atom, silicon. Every leap of civilization is an energy leap. Our entire civilization runs on 20 terawatts. The Sun radiates twenty thousand billion times more, continuously, for free, for four and a half billion years. On the Kardashev scale, we're a Type 0.7 civilization. The Sun alone takes us to Type II.

B. SpaceX isn't participating in this transition. SpaceX owns the only door to it. Starship divides the cost of orbit by a hundred, the constellation handles communications, and the world's second player is ten years behind. I've already listed what that unlocks: orbital data centers, factories in microgravity, asteroid mining, Mars. What interests me today is the stage no one prices: what it unlocks in people's heads.

Because here's what demographers refuse to see. Western birth rates aren't collapsing because of housing prices. Our great-grandparents had six kids in unheated homes. It's collapsing because we've confiscated the future. You don't have kids for a world we're told is ending. You have them for a world that's beginning. The Western birth rate peak coincides exactly with the peak of technological optimism: jets, the atom, Apollo. Girard understood it: a civilization deprived of a frontier turns its rivalry inward, and that's precisely our era—culture wars, resentment, decline managed by committees. Give it back a frontier, and that same mimetic energy becomes emulation, construction, transmission. The colonization of the cosmos is the first project capable of unifying the West since 1969. We'll have kids again like we laid cathedral stones, for a structure we won't see completed. The first baby born in orbit will do more for European demographics than fifty years of family policies.

Now, add it up. A terrestrial economy relaunched by a shared project and a demographics that rebounds. A complete orbital economy—energy, computing, industry, tourism—where every dollar passes through the same tollbooth. A solar system whose matter and energy exceed everything Earth will ever hold. And one single company that controls access.

If A, wealth follows captured energy, and if B, SpaceX alone opens a reservoir a billion times greater, then the conclusion follows on its own: comparing SpaceX to terrestrial wealth is a category error. Earth stops being the denominator. "More than the rest of Earth" isn't hyperbole. It's rounding down.

No one, in front of the first oil well in 1859, sketched Dubai. No one, in front of the first transistor, imagined computing would become the world's top industry. We're in 1859, and the well has just gushed.

I stand by what I wrote a month ago: buy optimism. I'm changing just one detail. The size of the underlying asset. It's the universe.

Elon Musk's personal pilot once described what happens on the plane between meetings.

He said Elon doesn't sleep on flights. He doesn't watch movies. He doesn't make small talk with whoever is traveling with him. He reads. For the entire flight. Technical papers, engineering specifications, physics textbooks. Highlighted. Annotated. Pages folded. Like a graduate student preparing for an exam that never ends.

The pilot said he has seen Elon read an entire 400-page engineering manual on a single transatlantic flight and then walk off the plane and ask questions about it that the authors of the manual probably couldn't answer. Not because he's trying to impress anyone. Because he genuinely needs to understand every system at the level of the engineers who designed it.

He said the most unsettling part is the speed. Elon doesn't read at a normal pace. He processes pages the way most people process paragraphs. And he retains almost everything. Engineers who worked with him for years say he will reference a detail from a paper he read six months ago mid-conversation as if he read it that morning.

The world sees a CEO making decisions. What actually happens is a man who reads more technical material than most PhD students and then walks into a room with the engineers and speaks their language. The authority isn't inherited from the title. It's earned page by page on every flight between factories.

Elon Musk showed up to his own birthday party in 2008 and nobody was there. He had invited friends. Most of them had stopped returning his calls because he had borrowed money from nearly everyone he knew and the companies were failing publicly.

His brother Kimbal was the only one who came. They sat together in an almost empty room and Elon said something Kimbal has never forgotten. He said "I think I used up all my goodwill." Not dramatically. Factually. Like he was reading a balance sheet of human relationships and the number had hit zero.

This was the man who had made his friends millionaires from PayPal. The same people who became wealthy because of him were now avoiding his calls because his new ventures looked like they were going to fail. The loyalty evaporated at exactly the same speed as the bank balance.

Kimbal said Elon didn't seem angry about it. He seemed like a man confirming something he had always suspected. That most relationships are transactional and the transaction was no longer favorable.

The loneliest birthday in Silicon Valley history happened to a man who had made more people rich than almost anyone in the room. And the lesson it taught him about loyalty and isolation is visible in every decision he has made since.

He stopped expecting people to stay. He started expecting them to leave. And he built everything after that accordingly.
