Zitat China lands reusable rocket for first time, state media says
China has successfully landed a reusable rocket for the first time in a major breakthrough for the country's space programme, according to state media.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation said the Long March 10B rocket lifted off from Hainan in southern China at 12:15 local time (04:15GMT) on Friday.
Around six minutes after separating from the rocket's upper stage, its booster returned to Earth vertically and was recovered on a floating platform.
It signals that China may be able to challenge America's dominance in reusable rockets after successful landings by Elon Musk's SpaceX and Blue Origin, which is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Zitat The thirteenth flight test of Starship is preparing to launch as soon as Thursday, July 16. The 90-minute launch window will open at 5:45 p.m. CT.
A live webcast of the flight test will begin about 30 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change, so be sure to check in here and stay tuned to our X account for updates.
Zitat Anil Menon@astro_anil I’ll be watching from space, a little early for the launch window, but will be looking for the ascent plume!
ISS makes a near-overhead daylight pass of Starbase at 5:24pm central — 141 km slant range, 19° off nadir, just port, sun ~37° up. Beautiful geometry… 21 minutes ahead of launch window. 1:00 PM · Jul 12, 2026

Zitat WASHINGTON, July 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Monday closed its review into a SpaceX (SPCX.O), Starship booster's return failure that occurred during a flight test in May, clearing the way for Elon Musk's space company to launch the rocket's next test flight from Texas as soon as this week.
The rocket system's Super Heavy booster launched Starship, the upper stage, from Texas into space on a path into the Indian Ocean. But Super Heavy failed its attempt to return in a controlled soft landing in the Gulf of Mexico.
Starship's upper-stage propulsive separation maneuver during ascent — in which it blasts its own engines to rocket into space — pushed the Super Heavy booster into an unexpected position, according to SpaceX. Five of Super Heavy's engines subsequently failed to ignite and the booster plunged into the Gulf at high speeds, exploding on impact.
The FAA, which oversees U.S. commercial rocket activities, said SpaceX's mishap report into the failure cited heat damage on the booster during ascent and "erroneous engine alarm system settings." The agency said SpaceX identified four corrective actions.
Zitat NASASpaceflight.com 🚨BREAKING NEWS - Federal Aviation Administration Closes Starship Flight 12 Investigation, Clearance Given for Flight 13 🚨 The Federal Aviation Administration has officially closed the mishap investigation into the SpaceX Starship Flight 12 launch. The final report confirms that there were no reports of public injury or damage to public property during the test. With the investigation complete, SpaceX has been cleared to proceed with Starship Flight 13 launch operations, provided that all safety and licensing requirements are fully met. The SpaceX-led investigation, overseen and accepted by the Federal Aviation Administration, identified multiple anomalies that occurred across both stages of the vehicle: • Super Heavy Booster Deviation: At stage separation, slight differences in the engine startup sequence on the Starship spacecraft caused the directional flip of the Super Heavy booster to deviate from its target by approximately 90 degrees. • Boostback Burn Interruption: Following the stage separation and the off-target flip, the booster attempted its scheduled boostback burn. However, 5 of its 33 Raptor engines experienced issues during the re-light attempt, which forced the boostback burn to end prematurely and ultimately led to the loss of the booster. • Root Causes of Booster Loss: The final mishap report cites two primary root causes for the loss of the Super Heavy booster. These include heat effects impacting propulsion system components during ascent and erroneous settings within the engine alarm system. • Starship Second Stage Engine Loss: Approximately 40 seconds after stage separation, the Starship spacecraft lost one of its three Raptor vacuum-optimized engines. Despite this loss, the vehicle successfully demonstrated its engine-out capability and reached its planned suborbital trajectory. To prevent a reoccurrence of these issues, SpaceX has identified four major corrective actions involving both hardware and software configuration updates. The engine startup sequence has been modified to handle timing variability more robustly, ensuring a more reliable flip in the intended direction to maximize overall performance. Additionally, the upcoming Super Heavy booster features hardware modifications designed to improve engine re-light reliability, alongside updates to the engine alarm and abort settings to properly match the intense conditions experienced in a multi-engine flight environment. SpaceX has also applied hardware and operational modifications to address the interconnected causes of the second-stage engine loss, with further reliability upgrades planned for future iterations of the Raptor engine.
Zitat According to a new SpaceX analysis, a sequence change in Ship's engines, which ignite before the two rocket halves physically detach in a maneuver known as "hot staging," led to a 90-degree error in Super Heavy's orientation after separation. Super Heavy's boostback burn was also cut short when five of its 33 engines failed to relight. SpaceX says it has introduced a modified startup sequence for Ship and hardware updates to Super Heavy to address the orientation anomaly and ignition issues, respectively, "along with updates to engine alarms and aborts to match the conditions seen in the multi-engine flight environment."
Ship ran into a bit of trouble during Flight 12 but also managed to pull off some firsts. One of the spacecraft's three vacuum-optimized Raptors was lost 40 seconds after stage separation, but it still reached its designated suborbital trajectory, demonstrating its "engine out" capabilities, according to the SpaceX update. The loss did, however, prevent Ship's in-space engine relight attempt. SpaceX traced the failure to "interconnected causes" and has introduced a number of fixes for the upcoming Flight 13, "with additional reliability improvements planned in upcoming versions of the Raptor engine."
Stowed inside Ship's payload bay for Flight 13 are the first functional Starlink V3 satellites that Starship will deliver to space. SpaceX plans to eventually launch perhaps 100,000 of the upgraded version of its internet satellite constellation spacecraft, which it says will increase the capacity and speed of its wireless network services. SpaceX is including 20 Starlink V3 satellites aboard Flight 13, which will be released for functionality testing while in space. Six of those will be outfitted with cameras for the same type of heatshield inspection performed during Flight 12. Ultimately, due to Starship's suborbital trajectory on this launch, all of these satellites are expected to burn up in Earth's atmosphere about 20 minutes after they are deployed.
For Flight 13, Super Heavy's main objectives will be the successful launch and separation from the Ship upper stage, a complete boostback burn and a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the deployment of Ship's 20 Starlink V3 payloads, SpaceX is also planning the in-space relight of one of the spacecraft's Raptor engines, followed by the successful descent and soft splashdown of the stage in the Indian Ocean.

Zitat Rocketry@SpaceNews92·Jul 12 SpaceX is pushing Starship Flight 13 into the highest dynamic pressure Max Q it has ever faced to maximize its payload capacity. If the internal pressure drops by just a few PSI, the whole rocket collapses like a crushed can. Yet, it flies without helium
For Starship, Elon Musk mandated a "first principles" rule: delete the helium entirely. Instead, SpaceX uses Autogenous Pressurization. The upgraded Raptor 3 engines take a tiny amount of liquid methane CH_4 and liquid oxygen LOX, route it through internal heat exchanger channels to cool the engine, and flash it into hot gas.
Zitat Rocketry@SpaceNews92 SpaceX wants to launch Starship multiple times a day, but a quiet physical bottleneck stands in the way: engine thermal conditioning. Before ignition, the 33-Raptor cluster must be chilled to cryogenic temperatures to avoid destroying the turbopumps on startup. This rapid plunge into extreme cold subjects the entire booster's plumbing to massive mechanical contraction and thermal strain. Scaling this process to a rapid launch cadence requires materials that can survive constant, rapid thermal cycling without fracturing—a frontier where metallurgy meets high-frequency spaceflight. #SpaceX #Starship #RaptorEngine #AerospaceEngineering #MaterialsScience #RocketScience #Cryogenics #ThermalDynamics 9:44 PM · Jul 15, 2026
