Zitat von Ulrich Elkmann im Beitrag #75German startup Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) just put the brakes on its first launch.

Zitat Chinese Long March 7A rocket explodes shortly after liftoff | by Andrew Jones August 10, 2026
China appears to have lost an unknown payload after a Long March 7A rocket exploded less than 90 seconds into flight, according to amateur footage.
The Long March 7A lifted off at around 8:00 a.m. Eastern (1200 UTC) August 10 from Wenchang, Hainan island, as indicated in advance by airspace closure notices. Amateur footage from the launch near the coastal spaceport and restreamed via Youtube shows an explosion around 85 seconds into the flight.
State broadcaster China National Radio (CNR) published a brief report of the expected mission around liftoff, naming the payload as Zhongxing-4B. Low numbered Zhongxing satellites are thought to be satellites for military communications.
The satellite series matches the geosynchronous orbit profile for the Long March 7A, which is increasingly used for such launches, alongside the older, hypergolic Long March 3B. The Long March 7A debuted in March 2020 in a mission that also ended in failure following an explosion. The launcher had since proven its reliability with a series of successful flights, most recently launching the Tianlian-3 (01) satellite towards GEO in late July.
It is not immediately clear how or if the failure will impact upcoming missions. The rocket first stage and side boosters use YF-100 kerolox engines which are also used on the Long March 5. The Long March 5 is currently scheduled to launch the Chang’e-7 robotic lunar south pole landing mission Aug. 24. The standard Long March 7 for low Earth orbit is used to launch cargo to the Tiangong space station once every eight months, with the latest launching in May.
The second Zhuque-3 rocket is scheduled to launch later Aug. 10 from the commercial zone at Jiuquan, with a planned second orbital booster recovery attempt.
The launch was China’s 56th orbital launch attempt of 2026, and the fourth failure. Previous failures involved the Long March 3B and debut of the Ceres-2 solid rocket in January, and the loss of the debut Tianlong-3 rocket in early April.
Zitat Based on the timing of the explosion, it occurred during the flight of the first stage of the vehicle, likely around the time of maximum dynamic pressure as the rocket accelerated through the lower atmosphere. It’s possible that the vehicle’s flight was ended by on-board ordnance known as a “flight termination system,” which ignites when the vehicle veers off course.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding the cause of Monday’s failure, the significance of the problem is difficult to ascertain. Given the closed nature of China’s state-operated space program, it may never be clear what caused the rocket to explode.
However, if the cause is due to the first stage’s main engine, the YF-100, there could be broader implications for China’s space program. The YF-100 is by far the most commonly used rocket engine in China’s space program. The engine, fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, has a thrust of 270,000 pounds at sea level.
It has powered the Long March 7 and newer Long March 7A variant for the last decade. This rocket performs a variety of tasks for China’s space program, from communications satellite launches to boosting the Tianzhou cargo spacecraft that ferries supplies to the Chinese space station in low-Earth orbit.
The broader concern for China’s space program is that the YF-100 engine also powers other rockets. As many as nine Chinese rockets, from the Long March 5 to Long March 8 vehicles, used various amounts of YF-100 engines. Even new rockets, such as the Long March 10, use modified variants of the YF-100 technology.
May delay Chang’e 7
If this issue is engine-related, it could delay one of China’s most important launches for the rest of the year.
The country’s ambitious Chang’e 7 robotic mission to the Moon was due to launch on a Long March 5 rocket about two weeks from now. That rocket’s boosters are powered by YF-100 engines. The Chang’e 7 mission is an important component of China’s lunar program as the vehicle combines an orbiter, lander, rover, and mini-hopper. It is bound for the area near Shackleton crater, in the vicinity of the South Pole of the Moon. It would be the first rover by any country ever sent to explore this region.
Nachtrag.
Zitat Peter Hague@peterrhague What I think I’m seeing:
1. Flight looks normal until max q 2. Second stage tanks buckle judging on where the bend seems to be, compared to pictures of the rocket on the pad 3. Tanks rip open and LOx cloud appears. First stage plume seems largely unaffected 4. Second stage is basically gone, first stage and boosters briefly continue flight until FTS triggers 7:59 PM · Aug 10, 2026

Zitat Andøya, 5 September 2026 – Today, Isar Aerospace became the first commercial space company from Europe to successfully deliver satellites into orbit, on what was only its second flight. Mission ‘Onward and Upward’ lifted off from Isar Aerospace’s dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway at 10:12 pm CEST, deploying payloads in orbit. “Today, Isar Aerospace opened space from Continental Europe. Launch continues to be the largest bottleneck for the global space industry and from today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers”, said Daniel Metzler, CEO and Co-Founder of Isar Aerospace. Isar Aerospace is working with the customers to confirm the satellite status.
Daniel Metzler, CEO and Co-Founder of Isar Aerospace, said: “We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before. Europe now has sovereign access to space. We have entered into a new chapter for European spaceflight. I am incredibly proud of our team, that has made this success story from Europe possible. We will now focus on rapidly scaling launch vehicle production, deliver on our order pipeline, and meet surging global demand.”
Isar Aerospace’s qualification flight broke several records in European commercial spaceflight: The vehicle successfully transited MaxQ, completed MECO and stage separation, and then ignited second stage as planned. It crossed the Kármán line at an altitude of 100 kilometers and jettisoned the payload fairing before reaching orbital velocity. After completing circularization burn, spacecraft separation was completed successfully.
The mission’s payloads were selected through the Microlauncher Competition of the German Space Agency at DLR that provides educational institutions and start-ups with low-cost access to space. The Microlauncher Competition is funded through ESA Boost!
Today’s mission ‘Onward and Upward’ proved Isar Aerospace’s orbital launch capability. In parallel, the company has advanced its global network of available launch sites and is nearing completion of Europe’s largest integrated production facility for launch vehicles. In addition to its current launch site in Andøya, Norway, Isar Aerospace is constructing a launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada, covering mid- to high-inclination orbits critical for Earth observation and communications.
A historic turning point for Europe
Today marks a new era for the global space industry. The launch is not only a technical masterpiece, but also a breakthrough that will influence Europe's strategic, economic, and technological future. Customers around the world now have a sovereign launch option at their disposal.
Next ‘Spectrum’ launch vehicles already in production
Isar Aerospace's model is designed to build scalable launch capabilities. That is why the company is not only developing and building a launch vehicle, but has also built the “machine behind the machine”, including a vertically integrated manufacturing model and a high degree of automation in production. ‘Spectrum’ launch vehicles 3-7 are already in production. With the opening of the new 40,000 m² production facility, Isar Aerospace will eventually have the capacity to manufacture up to 40 launch vehicles per year.
