Neulich gab es übrigens einen Artikel bei Marginal Revolution, der einige interessante Hintergründe zur Sortenvielfalt von Agragprodukten (speziell Äpfeln) enthielt (http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalre...-increased.html).
Sehr lesenswert und beantwortet einige der Fragen die Sie aufwerfen.

Unter anderem fand ich folgende Überlegung interessant:
Globalisierung führt zu einer gewissen weltweiten Vereinheitlichung. Dieser Vereinheitlichung fallen viele lokale Spezialitäten zum Opfer. Aber für den einzelnen Konsumenten wird dadurch die Auswahl nicht kleiner sondern größer.
Also: Statt 4 Sorten in Land A und 4 andere Sorten in Land B (d.h. zusammen 8 Sorten) gibt es dann kommerziell verfügbar nur noch 6 Sorten - diese aber in beiden Ländern.
Die praktische Folge: Auch wenn von den 7098 (!!) Apfelsorten die es im 19. Jahrhundert gab, mittlerweile 6121 ausgestorben oder zumindest kommerziell nicht mehr verfügbar sind, hat ein moderner Supermarktkunde eine viel größere Apfelauswahl als sein Vorfahr im 19. Jahrhundert. Und sogar eine größere Auswahl an "19.Jahrhundert-Sorten".
