LAS VEGAS — A Russian satellite broke up in low Earth orbit in a deliberate test of a Russian antisatellite device that created thousands of pieces of debris.
The satellite, Cosmos-1408, appears to have broken up late Nov. 14 or early Nov. 15 Eastern time, based on commercial and government tracking data. The satellite, weighing about 2,000 kilograms, was launched in 1982 and, now defunct, was last tracked in an orbit about 485 kilometers high.
State Department spokesman Ned Price confirmed the satellite was destroyed by an ASAT. “The Russian Federation recklessly conducted a destructive satellite test of a direct-ascent antisatellite missile against one of its own satellites,” he said at a Nov. 15 State Department briefing. “The test has so far generated over 1,500 pieces of trackable orbital debris and hundreds of thousands of pieces of smaller orbital debris that now threaten the interests of all nations.”
He added that the test “will significantly increase the risk to astronauts and cosmonauts on the International Space Station, as well as to other human spaceflight activities.”
Early Nov. 15, the seven people on the ISS were instructed to shelter in their Crew Dragon and Soyuz vehicles because of a “debris cloud.” That debris cloud has since made several other close approaches to the station, although no damage was reported. The station’s crew resumed some operations later in the day although parts of the station remain sealed off as a precaution against any impacts.
“Russia’s dangerous and irresponsible behavior jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of outer space and clearly demonstrates that Russia’s claims of opposing the weaponization of space are disingenuous and hypocritical,” Price said.

That 2007 Chinese ASAT test created debris that continues to be a hazard for the satellites and the International Space Station. Last week, the station performed a debris avoidance maneuver when one piece of debris from that test showed a risk of passing close to the station. While the risk diminished before the time of closest approach, NASA and the other ISS partners elected to go ahead with the maneuver in place of a reboost maneuver originally planned for later this month.

Wobei ich 10 zu 1 wetten würde, daß das Resultat von Blindheit in der Art von Ingenieuren & Projektemachern war. Die Aufgabe war: können wir ein System bauen, mit dem man punktgenau eine gezielte Kollision bei 28.000 km/h durchführen kann? Und niemand hat darüber nachgedacht, daß das Rersultat eine sich rapide ausbreitende Trümmerwolke sein würde. Das stand nicht in der Aufgabenbeschreibung.

Two Navigational Warnings pointing to a (missile) launch from #Plesetsk match with two passes of Kosmos 1408, near 2:52 and 4:27 UT (Nov 15). So this could point to a possible #ASAT intercept around those times. The 2:52 UT lines up with the satellite trajectory very well.

@richard_e_cole made a good remark in answer to my blogpost: rather than the interceptor coming from behind, it was probably more like launching in the same direction and then Kosmos 1408 coming from behind, like the target was rear-ending so to speak.
Kosmos-1408 made a pass over Plesetsk at about 0247 UTC Nov 15, within the NOTAM period

It’s delusional to launch an ASAT like this because there were 3 passes of Cosmos 1408 close to ISS within 3 rev. following.

Some insights into the #Russian #ASAT test, courtesy of my colleague David Wright. Looks like the Cosmos 1408 satellite was at an altitude of about 470 km & had a mass of about 2200 kg. A direct hit by the ASAT would have caused the satellite to completely fragment.

Great resource here, compiled by @brianweeden, that catalogs every anti-satellite test from 1959 through 2020. Monday's test by Russia created more trackable debris than all of the country's previous intercepts combined.

SWF has released an updated compilation of the history of anti-satellite (ASAT) testing in space as a public Google Spreadsheet. The update was done by SWF summer intern Kaila Pfrang, working with SWF Director of Program Planning Dr. Brian Weeden.
The goal of the spreadsheet is to document all ASAT tests in space and any orbital debris created by those tests. Criteria for inclusion in this sheet are: tests of a known ASAT system (either co-orbital or direct-ascent) or tests of a hit-to-kill midcourse missile defense system against a target above 100 km.
The sheet currently lists more than 70 tests that have been conducted by four countries (the United States, Russia, China, and India) since 1959. The majority of the tests were conducted by the United States and Soviet Union during the first two decades of the Cold War, but there has been a recent resurgence with more than 20 tests conducted since 2005. In total, ASAT testing has created nearly 5,000 pieces of cataloged orbital debris, more than 3,200 of which are still on orbit. Many of the tests pushed orbital debris much higher than the altitude of the destroyed object, which contributed to the average lifespan of 25 years for the debris from each test to re-enter the atmosphere.
