II. In Inception ging es nicht um simulierte Realitäten, sondern das Eindringen in Träume mit technischen Mitteln.
III. Soweit ich weiß waren die Menschen in Baxters Roman eben keine Simulationen. Lediglich das Universum außerhalb unseres Sonnensystems war nur eine Vortäuschung. Deshalb würde ein Absturz nicht zur Katastrophe führen, sondern quasi die wahre Natur der Welt offenbaren.
Das wissen die Betroffenen aber nicht, während die "Einschläge näherkommen."

This would obviate the need, for example, to reproduce continually the substance at the centre of the Earth, with which we never interact directly. ... A final possibility is that even our bodies are simulated, so that the boundary of reality is drawn around our very consciousness." (S. 395-96)

Eine nette Volte ist, daß "Touching Centauri" zwar im Jahr 2025 spielt, aber zu den "nichtstattgefundenen Zukünften" zählt. Der Laserpuls von der Erde zu Alpha Centauri benötigt hin & zurück 8,7 Jahre, muß also 2016 oder 2017 ausgesandt worden sein. Und in der Erzählung gibt es schon neuronale Implantate, die Reportern den Mitschnitt des Gesehenen und Gehörten erlauben und eine quasi-telepathische Kommunikation. Und an Ungeborenen wird auch herumgebastelt.

In der Erzählung besitzt Alpha Centauri A vier Planeten; entdeckt 2010 durch das Eddington-Weltraumteleskop der ESA (Baxter hat die Story 2002 veröffentlicht & hätte wissen können, daß die EU solch ein Projekt nicht mal eben in 96 Monaten hinhudelt.) Für Proxima Centauri sind 2 Planeten nachgewiesen: 2016 und 2020; für Alpha Centauri A ist vor genau zwei Jahren, im Februar 2021, ein möglicher Kandidat gemeldet worden, mit Neptunmasse & 1,1 astornomischen Einheiten Abstand, der möglicherweise nur auf einen Instrumentenfehler zurückgeht. Beobachtungen mit dem JWST sind für Juli oder August 2023 geplant, wenn der Stern ins Blickfeld kommt. Die Meldung eines Begleiters um Alpha Centauri B, die es 2012 gab, gilt seit 2015 als Datenartefakt.
Und Baxter, der ja ein großer Fan von Larry Niven ist (sein ganzes Frühwerk, einschließlich des Xeelee-Zyklus, orientiert sich am Werk von Niven), dürfte bei der Erzählung auch an Niven's "Like Banquo's Ghost" (World of IF, September 1968) gedacht haben, dt. Titel "Letztes Signal von Alpha Centauri," in der auf das Ankunftssignal der ersten Raumsonde mit dieser Destination gewartet wird & das Ergebnis den Erdlingen und den Außerirdischen in der Bodenkontrolle längst bekannt ist. Die ersteren haben die Sonde nämlich beim Eintreffen vorsichtshalber abgeschossen & haben dann nachgeschaut, wer die wohl losgeschickt haben könnte. Per Warpantrieb.

This is the sixth volume in the editor’s series of anthologies mixing speculative fiction with Western themes. All ten stories are science fiction, often involving frontier settlements on alien worlds. In some cases, the connection with Western fiction is obvious; in others, it is very subtle. Many of the stories can be classified as space opera or military science fiction, with a few lighter pieces as a change of pace. ... In “High Noon on Proxima Centauri b” by Cliff Winnig, a marshal faces three assassins intent on murdering a woman and child who are the only survivors of a hostile takeover by a rival mining company. The leader of the killers proves to be a tougher opponent than expected, but the marshal has unexpected resources of her own.
Although fairly closely following the plot of the classic Western movie referenced in the title, the story adds originality in the form of futuristic technology and alien beasts that serve the function of horses. Fans of action-packed, violent adventure stories will best appreciate this blend of genres.

“Daughter of Omega” by Matthew P. Schmidt takes place after an artificial intelligence of immense power revealed that humanity existed inside a simulation manipulated by a mysterious entity. A war between the AI and the entity followed, with much destruction of the simulation and many human deaths.
The protagonist is a young woman resurrected by the AI to serve as its spokesperson. She abandoned her Christian faith at the time of her death. The plot concerns a meeting with her uncle, a Catholic priest who opposes both the AI and the entity. The two humans and the AI form a partial alliance against the entity, and the woman reconsiders her faith.
This is an imaginative science fiction story, with more complexity than I have indicated above. It seems appropriate to the theme of indecision that the nature of the entity remains unknown, and that the woman is still uncertain about her service to the AI at the story’s conclusion. The author succeeds in making an extraordinary premise believable through the use of realistic details.
