🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨 AST SpaceMobile confirms loss of satellite following Blue Origin New Glenn launch
AST SpaceMobile has issued a press release, stating that its BlueBird 7 satellite was placed into a lower than planned orbit by the upper stage of the Blue Origin New Glenn launch vehicle. While the satellite separated from the launch vehicle and powered on, the altitude is too low to sustain operations with its on-board thruster technology and will be de-orbited. The cost of the satellite is expected to be recovered under the company’s insurance policy.
Blue Origin has yet to comment on the launch failure and it is currently unknown whether the Federal Aviation Administration requires a mishap investigation. Keep an eye on the NASASpaceflight.com socials for updates.

“We have confirmed payload separation,” Blue Origin posted on X. “AST SpaceMobile has confirmed the satellite has powered on. The payload was placed into an off-nominal orbit. We are currently assessing and will update when we have more detailed information.”

Later Sunday, AST said in a statement that the satellite’s orbit was “too low to sustain operations” with its onboard thrusters. The spacecraft “will be de-orbited” and AST said it expects to recover the satellite’s undisclosed cost under an insurance policy.

The twin-engine upper stage was supposed to complete two burns to place AST SpaceMobile’s direct-to-cell satellite into an orbit approximately 285 miles (460 kilometers) above the Earth at inclination of 49 degrees to the equator. There, the upper stage was expected to release AST’s BlueBird 7 satellite about 1 hour and 15 minutes into the mission. The roughly six-ton spacecraft was supposed to unfurl a 2,400-square-foot communications array antenna and join a half-dozen other satellites undergoing tests for AST’s cellular broadband network.

Blue Origin’s upper stage performed well on the first two New Glenn flights last year. The rocket “nailed insertion” into the correct orbit on the first test flight in January 2025, according to Dave Limp, the company’s CEO. Officials reported a similarly precise trajectory on the second New Glenn launch, which dispatched two NASA science probes toward Mars in November.

Something, presumably a problem on the upper stage, prevented the New Glenn rocket from achieving the same success Sunday. A preliminary set of orbital tracking data from the US Space Force a few hours after launch indicated the rocket was in a much lower orbit than anticipated, with an altitude of just 95 miles (154 kilometers) at its closest point to Earth. This would bring about a destructive reentry within hours or days.

Upper stages have been a menace for other rockets of late. SpaceX suffered upper stage failures on three test flights of the massive Starship rocket last year. Second stage problems are responsible for the only blemishes in SpaceX’s near-perfect reliability record with the workhorse Falcon 9 rocket. For SpaceX, these are the only pieces of the Falcon 9 and Starship that haven’t been recovered, inspected, and reused.

The scenario of a successful booster recovery but not a successful payload delivery is to be expected when a rocket goes for reusability from day 1. SpaceX spent a while delivering customer payloads - and had some failures - before developing reuse. Their second stage was mature by the time they were landing boosters.

Also, Blue Origin have picked hard mode for their upper stage using hydrolox.

A second orbit dataset from SpaceForce for the BlueBird-7 sat shows it in a 265 x 485 km x 43.0 deg orbit, indicating that the upper stage delivered about 1000 m/s, mostly changing orbital inclination. This is about half the dV that would have been needed for the target orbit

Without the inclination change this satellite would have made it to orbit. I’d really like to know why there was this launch profile. Was Blue Origin forced to avoid certain azimuths because of impact point limitations. Or were they hoping to demonstrate plane change capability?

Now that we have a more complete view, we wanted to provide an update on our NG-3 mission. While we are pleased with the nominal booster recovery, we clearly didn't deliver the mission our customer wanted, and our team expects. Early data suggest that on our second GS2 burn, one of the BE-3U engines didn’t produce sufficient thrust to reach our target orbit. Blue Origin is leading the anomaly investigation with FAA oversight to learn from the data and implement the improvements needed to quickly return to flight operations. We have been in steady communication with the team at AST SpaceMobile, we appreciate their partnership, and we’re looking forward to many flights together.

In a recent hotfire our BE-3U engine reached more than 211,500 lbf thrust. That makes BE-3U the highest thrust-to-weight hydrogen engine in history, at more than 90! Here is the video of that test for your enjoyment.

Welcome to Edition 8.42 of the Rocket Report!

Rocket Report: Starship launch delayed, German launch company may aid Canada

Isar may assist Canadian launch firms. European Spaceflight attempts to make sense of news this week that a German submarine company has partnered with a German launch company, Isar Aerospace, to sell 12 new submarines to Canada. Confused yet? The German maritime defense company TKMS is competing with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean for the submarine contract, and final bids were due in March. Beyond finances, the competitors are looking for ways to sweeten their proposals. After submitting its bid, TKMS said it had partnered with German launch services provider Isar Aerospace to help establish sovereign Canadian access to space.

Isar probably will help, rather than compete … In recent months Canada has gotten serious about developing its own sovereign access to space. As part of its Launch the North initiative, Canada will invest $105 million over three years to establish a small-lift launch capability by the end of 2028. The initial awards included $8.3 million for Reaction Dynamics, the Canada Rocket Company, and NordSpace. The submarine proposal appears to be not an effort to supplant those three companies, but rather envisions Isar’s role as an industrial and technical enabler of the Canadian efforts.

Zitat
The Dean drive was a device created and promoted by inventor Norman Lorimer Dean (1902–1972) that he claimed to be a reactionless drive.[1] Dean claimed that his device was able to generate a uni-directional force in free space, in violation of Newton's third law of motion from classical physics. His claims generated notoriety because, if true, such a device would have had enormous applications, completely changing human transport, engineering, space travel and more

The Dean drive obtained a good deal of publicity in the 1950s and 1960s via the columns and conference presentations of John W. Campbell, the longtime editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine. At that time, Campbell believed that his magazine had to change society by helping breakthrough research that was rejected by "mainstream" science, and he promoted a series of far-reaching ideas that had dubious scientific bases, like Dianetics, dowsing, the Hieronymus machine, and the Dean drive.[7][8][9] Campbell believed that the device worked and claimed to have witnessed it operating on a bathroom scale.[10] The weight reading on the scale appeared to decrease when the device was activated. He subsequently published photographs of the scale with the drive stopped and running. The June 1960 cover of Astounding magazine featured a painting of a United States submarine near Mars, supposedly propelled there by a Dean drive.[11]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_drive

Oh, the therapy, the therapy
That Hubbard gave to JWC,
And it took him back to his infancy
The wonderful, wonderful therapy

Oh, the Dean Machine, the Dean Machine,
You put it right in a submarine,
And it flies so high that it can't be seen-
The wonderful, wonderful Dean Machine!

35 Milliarden Euro für Verteidigung im All – Merz kündigt deutsche Raumfahrt-Offensive an

Stand: 18:12 Uhr

https://www.welt.de/politik/deutschland/...ialflow_twitter

Weltraumsicherheit: Drei strategische Handlungsfelder

https://www.bmvg.de/de/aktuelles/erste-w...gierung-6042422

Key mission for Europe’s commercial space enterprise scrubbed again: Isar Aerospace is not hurting for money, but it is sorely lacking in the currency of flight experience.

16. Juni 2026 01:40

Isar Aerospace still commands top position among a new generation of European rocket startups, but the company’s efforts to launch a critical test flight of its Spectrum rocket continue to encounter roadblocks. The latest delay came Monday, when Isar scrubbed a launch attempt after “detecting off nominal behavior in the vehicle’s fluid systems,” according to a social media post. “The teams are analyzing the new data to isolate the root cause.”

The two-stage, 92-foot-tall (28-meter) Spectrum rocket was awaiting liftoff from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway. It was the fourth time in five months that Isar Aerospace, headquartered near Munich, Germany, had reached a target launch date for the second test flight of the Spectrum launch vehicle. Andøya Space, the company that owns the launch site, said on its website that the current launch window runs through June 21. Isar did not immediately announce a new schedule for launching the second Spectrum test flight.

The Spectrum rocket has missed three launch windows so far this year. Isar called off a launch attempt on January 21 due to an issue with a pressurization valve, and then halted a countdown on March 25, moments before liftoff, when engineers detected rising temperatures in the rocket’s liquid propane fuel. Isar officials attributed the problem to a delay earlier in the countdown caused by an unauthorized boat in restricted waters along the rocket’s flight path.

Managers stood down from another launch attempt on April 9 to evaluate a suspected leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel. That led to Isar’s latest try to launch the Spectrum rocket on Monday.

Isar test flight scrubbed again. The latest delay came Monday, when Isar scrubbed a launch attempt after “detecting off nominal behavior in the vehicle’s fluid systems,” according to a social media post. “The teams are analyzing the new data to isolate the root cause.” Isar is flush with cash, having raised nearly $1 billion to date, but is still lacking in the critical currently of flight experience. The Spectrum rocket has flown just once to date, on a failed launch last year that lasted less than 30 seconds.

Gravity still winning… The two-stage, 92-foot-tall (28-meter) Spectrum rocket was awaiting liftoff from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway. It was the fourth time in five months that Isar Aerospace, headquartered near Munich, Germany, had reached a target launch date for the second test flight of the Spectrum launch vehicle.

Noch eine kleine, völlig unwichtige Fußnote. In RE Rocket Lab.

April), "Daughter of the Stars," "Eight Days A Week" und "Insight At Speed Is A Friend Indeed" (jeweils am 28., 20. und 3.

Paris-based chief correspondent John Leicester broke new ground with his latest exclusive, revealing that Russia is suspected of developing a space weapon designed to disable Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites — a critical component of Ukraine’s battlefield communications network.

The scoop was the result of Leicester’s years-long effort to build a trusted network of defense and intelligence sources who value his accuracy and impartiality. After receiving a tip about Russia’s covert plans to test a space weapon that could scatter shrapnel in orbit, Leicester spent weeks confirming the details through multiple sources, including access to non-public intelligence.

His reporting also drew on interviews with top military experts, including the commander of the Canadian military’s space division, who offered insight into the technological, military and strategic implications of such a weapon. Leicester’s ability to explain highly complex aerospace defense issues in clear, compelling language helped ensure that the story resonated widely with both expert and general audiences.

We often hear about the vulnerability of satellites in orbit. But the other challenge is the ability to react very quickly.

Rocket Lab just launched an American military satellite less than 17 hours after receiving the order to take off.

Once in orbit, it must approach another satellite, observe it, and photograph it, as if responding to a space threat.

Victus Haze is the first TacRS mission in which a single prime contractor supplied the entire package. Rocket Lab designed and built the spacecraft, launched it on its own rocket and is now running on-orbit operations. Chief executive Peter Beck described the integrated launch-and-spacecraft model as “transformative for responsive space.”

The vehicle, which carries an optical sensor developed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was built in roughly 18 months around in-house subsystems including propulsion, solar arrays, reaction wheels, radios and flight software.

Chasing a target in orbit

The Pioneer spacecraft is conducting rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO), maneuvering to inspect and photograph another satellite in what the US Space Force calls a simulated threat-response scenario. Rocket Lab’s announcement referred only to a “non-compliant satellite,” but the target is JACKAL-0004, built by the second Victus Haze performer, Colorado-based True Anomaly.

That spacecraft reached orbit on May 3, 2026, as a rideshare passenger on a SpaceX Falcon 9. The two operators are set to run a series of space domain awareness scenarios, each maneuvering against the other.

True Anomaly’s vehicle was originally meant to fly on Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha rocket, with Rocket Lab launching first. Two Alpha failures in 2025 grounded that rocket for close to a year and pushed Victus Haze into 2026, forcing the switch to a Falcon 9 and a reversal of the launch order.

TacRS is the US Space Force’s effort to deploy or reposition spacecraft in hours rather than months, a response to what it views as an increasingly contested orbital environment.

Colonel Bryon McClain, acting US Space Force Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Space Combat Power, framed Victus Haze as a demonstration of responding to “irresponsible behavior on orbit” under realistic conditions while leaning on commercial partners to keep costs down.

Today, True Anomaly’s JACKAL-0004 spacecraft officially begins VICTUS HAZE mission operations. Alongside Rocket Lab and partners from the United States Space Force, True Anomaly will operate the Jackal spacecraft as part of the USSF’s most advanced demonstration of Tactically Responsive Space (TacRS) to date.

Following the successful Mission X-3 flight test program and commissioning of JACKAL-0004 and Mosaic, the True Anomaly spacecraft operations team is fully operational and ready to execute rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO).

“The unwarned deployment of agile adversary engagement platforms into low Earth orbit and geosynchronous Earth orbit is driving the operational need to perform space superiority missions within minutes or hours from tasking,” said Even Rogers, co-founder and CEO of True Anomaly. “VICTUS HAZE stresses the entire required chain of associated effects and actions, from launch warning to rendezvous to timely image processing and dissemination. True Anomaly’s capabilities are purpose-built for these operations and we’re excited to demonstrate what becomes possible when industry and warfighters work side-by-side to tackle operational problems end-to-end.”

The threat environment in space is evolving faster than at any point in history. Adversaries are fielding advanced systems to novel orbits, at higher volumes, and with growing sophistication. The United States cannot afford to respond to on-orbit threats on timelines measured in months. Today, that response must happen in minutes or hours.
...
TacRS is the military’s capability to do exactly that: detect and respond to and emerging on-orbit threat and respond with decisive speed. These tactics and speed are foundational shifts in how the United States must operate in space to maintain superiority and secure the Nation’s interests in, from, and to space.

VICTUS HAZE will generate the data, operational experience, and institutional knowledge the Space Force needs to make TacRS a ready, repeatable capability. Every task that True Anomaly and Rocket Lab complete during this mission advances that goal.

True Anomaly was founded to solve the toughest problems in space superiority. There is no harder or more important problem right now than ensuring the United States can respond to on-orbit threats faster than its adversaries can act. VICTUS HAZE is a major step toward that future.

JACKAL-0004 is on orbit. The mission has begun.

The launch was scarcely announced in advance. The only public indication of an impending launch was the release of a warning for pilots and sailors to steer clear of the rocket’s flight path. Rocket Lab did not provide a livestream of the launch, as it does for most of its missions. As of Monday morning, officials from Rocket Lab and the Space Force had not acknowledged the launch in any official public statements.

But the US military’s catalog of space objects was updated over the weekend to reflect the launch. A new satellite, designated Victus Haze Puma, showed up in the catalog with a launch date of Friday from Rocket Lab’s privately run spaceport at Māhia Peninsula in New Zealand. The Space Force cataloged the spacecraft in a polar orbit ranging between 215 miles and 286 miles (347-by-461 km), with an inclination of about 97.5 degrees from the equator.

Rocket Lab was supposed to have a satellite on standby to go up and inspect True Anomaly’s spacecraft, ready to launch on short notice once military officials gave the order. The objective of the Victus Haze mission is to demonstrate how the military and its commercial partners might be able to quickly go up and assess a threat in orbit.

That is apparently what happened last week. Rocket Lab had another launch on its schedule for a commercial customer last week, but the company announced a postponement last Tuesday “to conduct additional checkouts,” without offering any additional details. Safety notices began to appear on aviation and maritime websites a couple of days later, just hours before the launch window for Victus Haze opened on Friday.

The launch time, estimated to be approximately 6:20 am EDT (10:20 UTC) on Friday, was set to coincide with the passage of the orbit of one of True Anomaly’s satellites over New Zealand. True Anomaly’s Jackal-0004 satellite launched from California on May 3 on a SpaceX rideshare mission. Publicly available orbit data indicated Rocket Lab’s Victus Haze Puma satellite approached within 60 miles (100 km) of the Jackal satellite just eight hours after launch, according to Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist who expertly tracks space activity using open source data.

Based on previous statements from officials, the Victus Haze mission will unfold with additional maneuvers to bring Rocket Lab’s Puma satellite closer to True Anomaly’s Jackal. Eventually, the satellites are expected to switch roles, with Jackal serving as the inspector and Puma acting as the target.

True Anomaly, a Colorado-based company specializing in building highly maneuverable satellites for national security missions, announced last Thursday that its latest Jackal spacecraft had achieved all of its “test objectives” following its arrival in orbit in early May to demonstrate the satellite’s capabilities for “end-to-end uncooperative rendezvous and proximity operations.”

(Brian Fox, Senior Systems Eingineer) The thing that takes months to get operational - to say hey, I'm confident my satellite can do what it needs to do, we compress down to two days or even quicker.

We have two primary objectives: we're gonna go rendezvous with an unknown RSO. It's not giving us any information back through like an inter-satellite link or anything. We don't have any telemetry from that spacecraft. The secondary objective is an evasive RSO. So this is an object or a satellite that is actively trying to avoid, you know, being imaged or something. So they know that you are coming in to do something, and they try to run away, And you have to maintain custody of them, so you go chase them and you still accomplish your goalof inspecting this object.

RSO = Resident Space Object; was alles + jedes bezeichnet, was sich gerade in einer Erdumlaufbahn befindet.

The partnership marks a major step toward German sovereign space capabilities, with a German-built satellite launching on a German-built rocket planned within 12 months of agreement

Munich/Berlin, 2 July 2026 – Planet Labs Germany, a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, and European space company Isar Aerospace today announced a strategic launch agreement. Under the agreement, Isar Aerospace will launch one of Planet’s next-generation high-resolution Pelican satellites, with additional satellites planned for future launches.

The Pelican is scheduled to fly on Isar Aerospace's Spectrum launch vehicle, currently scheduled as early as late 2026 from Isar Aerospace’s dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space. The Pelican will be assembled in Planet’s upcoming Berlin manufacturing facility. With both satellite and rocket being built in Germany, this launch will be a national first for the country, demonstrating rapid advancements in the nation’s sovereign space capabilities.

“Germany has set out an ambitious space agenda. Planet and Isar Aerospace are responding to the moment and delivering a first for the country: both satellite and rocket built in Germany,” said Martin Polak, Managing Director of Planet Labs Germany. “Most excitingly our joint teams have set an ambitious goal to do this first launch within less than 12 months of agreement – showcasing our agile aerospace approach and supporting rapidly evolving national priorities across security, resilience and civil applications.”

“This collaboration underscores the strength and growing strategic importance of the German and European space ecosystem,” said Stella Guillen, Chief Commercial Officer of Isar Aerospace. “With our unique approach to developing scalable, integrated launch capability, we aim to serve a rapidly growing global demand for access to space for commercial and government missions. Europe now has an unparalleled opportunity to leverage this ecosystem to build resilient space capabilities and unlock its potential for security and economic growth.”

The partnership marks a milestone in Planet’s end-to-end German space ecosystem. The company, which maintains its European headquarters and Mission Control in Berlin, is expanding its local footprint in 2026 with a new manufacturing facility to double the production capacity of its next-generation, high-resolution Pelican fleet. Planet is expected to add up to 70 new employees to its existing team of about 150 in Berlin, further strengthening Germany’s role as a leading nation in Europe’s commercial space ecosystem and AI-enabled geospatial solutions.

Isar Aerospace is currently ramping up manufacturing capability for its in-house developed launch vehicle Spectrum to respond to the surging worldwide demand for space access. In its 40,000 square meter factory near Munich, the company will build up to 40 launch vehicles per year. With a strong focus on automation and vertical integration, the company controls nearly every stage of the value chain—from design and manufacturing to testing and launching. This comprehensive approach not only supports sovereign space access but also enables rapid iteration and greater flexibility for customers.

The part that's rarely mentioned is that after reaching orbit they tested everything they could. They couldn't test the parachute pyros, so, they might fail. So they might as well go to the moon first if there's a chance they die during landing.

That’s wild. I hadn’t heard that before.

Zitat

German startup Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) just put the brakes on its first launch.

While testing its RFA One rocket on the launch pad at the U.K.'s SaxaVord Spaceport on the Shetland Islands in Scotland, the company found "an issue with the vehicle that requires further investigation," RFA wrote on X on Wednesday (July 28). Previously, the launch had been expected to happen in August or September, but RFA did not disclose a new launch date.

RFA did not disclose the nature of the issue, but said it would de-stack the staged rocket and that it would provide more details as the investigation continues. The situation means that the U.K. will need to wait at least a few more weeks to attempt its first-ever vertical launch from the region, amid global constraints in launch capacity and calls for increased European spaceflight autonomy.
