Armer Schiaparelli. Sah eigentlich wirklich gut aus mit dieser Mars-Mission - und dann doch wieder ein Fehlschlag.
So bleiben die wesentlichen Geheimnisse des roten Planeten weiterhin im Verborgenen. Mit meiner eher schlicht angelegten Denkstruktur erwartete ich dort natürlich nicht die von Ulrich Elkmann ausführlich dargestellten literarischen Geschichten, sondern hoffe immer noch, daß John Carter recht hatte.
Ordentliche Bilder von den Marsbewohnern wären alleine schon deshalb interessant gewesen, weil die Verfilmung die von Burroughs exakt beschriebenen Bekleidungssitten der Marsianer ignorierte und damit zum Scheitern verurteilt war.
OT. Auf der Suche nach was-anderem stolpere ich gerade über Arthur C. Clarkes ersten Roman, The Sands of Mars, von 1952, über die erste Marsexpedition. Ist von der Anlage her ein Jugendbuch & schwer didaktisch. Die Inschenjöre & Militärs haben sich entschlossen, behufs besserer communication skills einen Reporter mit auf die Reise zu schicken, um dem steuerzahlenden Publikum daheim das Unternehmen & seine Details besser zu vermitteln (& dem Autor Gelegenheit zu geben, die erklären zu lassen, was sie sich selbst eher nicht des Langen erzählen würden). Fernsehübertragung ist nicht. Kapitel 4 beginnt so:

Bei Burroughs ist der Umschlag von Wildwest in Wildweltraum ja buchstäblich nachzulesen. Hauptmann Carter, von Beruf Virginian, macht sich nach der Niederlage der Südstaaten nach Arizona auf, um Gold zu schürfen, wird von Rothäuten überfallen, flieht in eine Höhle, wird von einem unerklärlichen Bann gelähmt & sieht vorm Höhleneingang den Mars am Himmel blinken. Große Willensanstrengung; er verliert das Bewußtsein, Ende 1. Kapitel, & "beam me up, Scotty," wacht auf Barsoom auf, neben einer Brutstation der eierlegenden Marsianer. Inkubationszeit übrigens 2 Jahre. (Warum die weiblichen Exemplare eigentlich ausgeprägte sekundäre Geschlechtsmerkmale haben, obwohl sie ovipar sind, weiß die Wissenschaft bis heute nicht, aber die Illustratoren haben das dankbar vermerkt.)
Fritz Leiber hat mal aufgezeigt (in "John Carter: Sword of Theosophy", zuerst in Amra, Nr. 6, Sept. 1959, nachgedruckt in The Conan Swordbook, Mirage Press 1979 & Fahrd & Me, Wildside Press 1990, beim letzteren steht der Ampersand ausnahmsweis wirklich im Titel. Alles längst ungreifbar, von daher Zitat aus 2. Hand), daß sich Burroughs für seine Marsianer kräftig bei den Attributen bedient hat, mit denen Madame Blavatsky ihre "prähistorischen Wurzelrassen auf versunkenen Kontinenten" (Atlantis, Lemuria, pp.) ausgestattet hat, in diesem Fall in The Secret Doctrine, 1888.

Die beiden Scharteken Isis Unveiled & Secret Doctrine (je 2 Bde; isg. +2400 S.) waren für Fabulierer für die Zeit 1890 bis WK1 des öftern ein Steinbruch, weil man da "geheime Urweltlehren" samt Hintergrund einfach plündern konnte, ohne sich den Sums ausdenken zu müssen. (Die Romane von Franz Spunda zeigen das am unverstelltesten.) Nach der Lehre der Theosophie - Rudi Steiner hat das 1:1 übernommen - durchläuft jeder Planet 7 Evolutionsstufen, sinkt immer tiefer id Materie ab, während er Leben ausbildet, das seinerseits immer feinstofflich vergeisterter wird & nach Stufe 5 oder 6 zieht die ganze Veranstaltung weiter zum nächstinneren Planeten. (Wir sind Stufe 4; lt. HPB bilden sich gerade die ersten Anzeichen für Stufe V in Nordamerika heraus.) Die weisen Vorläufer geben dann den Neuen die spirituelle Räuberleiter. (Genau über die Bande haben das die "Kontaktler" im Untertassenzeitalter der 50er gespielt wie George Adamski.)

Der Nullmeridian des Mars ist 1970 von Merton Davies (Chef des Auswertungsteams der Ergebnisse von Mariner 6 & 7) auf den Krater Airy-0 festgelegt worden. Die "absolute Tageszählung" (in "Sols") entsprechend unserem Julianischen Datum (momentan 2.457.701,05) für den Mars beginnt übrigens mit Carl Otto Lamplands Geburtstag.

Man stelle sich vor, angesichts der hunderte von Zeichungen, tausenden von Beobachtungen, sogar "photographischer Evidenz" wäre die wissenschaftliche Elite, samt zuständiger Politik & besorgter Öffentlichkeit zwischen 1897 & 1914 zu dem Ergebnis gelangt: "The science is settled - Mars ist bewohnt - uns technisch voraus - zudem 1 sterbender Planet". Haben unsere Marsberechnungen zweifelsfrei ergeben. Verteidigung & Hochrüstung sind unabdingbar. (Hätte ja wohl auch ins Zeitklima gepaßt.) Wenn wir warten, bis wir mehr & mehr Daten haben, kann es längst zu spät sein. Natürlich müssen wir da welt-weit vorgehen. Marsverteidigungsabkommen. Jedes Jahr eine Marskonferenz in XXL. Scientists have been interested in this area for a while because of polygonal cracking and scalloped depressions. Places on Earth often show patterns like these due to ice below expanding, contracting, and melting due to changing temperatures, causing the cracks and scallops.

Explanation: It moved across the surface of Mars -- what was it? A dust devil. Such spinning columns of rising air are heated by the warm surface and are also common in warm and dry areas on planet Earth. Typically lasting only a few minutes, dust devils become visible as they pick up loose red-colored dust, leaving the darker and heavier sand beneath intact. Dust devils not only look cool -- they can leave visible trails, and have been credited with unexpected cleanings of the surfaces of solar panels. The images in the featured AI-interpolated video were captured in early August by the Perseverance rover currently searching for signs of ancient life in Jezero Crater. The six-second time-lapse video encapsulates a real duration of just over one minute. Visible in the distance, the spinning dust devil was estimated to be passing by at about 20 kilometers per hour and extend up about 2 kilometers high.

August 2023, mit einer der beiden NAVCAMS des Rovers; es handelt sich um 21 Einzelbilder, und auf dem Video sind nur die unteren 120 m des Staubteufels zu sehen.
