Zitat
The Lunar Flashlight Propulsion System (LFPS) responsible for placing the spacecraft into a polar orbit around the moon, and performing orbital maintenance throughout its eight-month mission. The LFPS comprises an advanced, low toxicity “green” micropropulsion system (MiPS). The LFPS development is the responsibility of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the MiPS is built by VACCO Industries. The VACCO Lunar Flashlight MiPS is approximately 3U in total volume and uses four 100 mN thrusters to provide a total of 290 m/s of delta-V. The LFPS uses the monopropellant fuel LMP-103S/LT. LMP-103S is an ionic liquid based blend based on the oxidizer ammonium dinitramide, produced by Eurenco Bofors in Sweden.

This propellant has higher specific impulse and higher propellant density than hydrazine, which results in increased performance. The propellant is considerably less toxic, non-carcinogenic and simpler to handle, ship, and store than hydrazine. This propulsion system is a first of its kind, and will mark NASA’s first mission using this propellant. The LFIPS uses four 100 mN HPGP Thrusters developed by Bradford ECAPS specifically for use with green propellant. Each thruster independently operates to perform both delta-V and ACS maneuvers controlled by an integrated microprocessor controller.

The first Hakuto-R lander, which ispace calls its Series 1 design, weighs about 2,200 pounds (1 metric ton) fully fueled for launch. About two-thirds of its launch mass is hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide propellants to feed the lander’s engines. With its legs extended, the lander stands 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) and 8.5 feet (2.6 meters) wide.

After departure from Cape Canaveral, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will head east over the Atlantic Ocean and shut down its first stage booster less than two-and-a-half minutes into the flight. The reusable first stage, flying for the fourth time, will return to Cape Canaveral for a propulsive landing.

The Falcon 9’s second stage will fire two times to send the Hakuto-R lander on a speedy trajectory to carry it far away from Earth. Separation of the lander from the Falcon 9 upper stage is scheduled 46 minutes into the mission. That will be followed by activation of the spacecraft’s systems and extension of its four landing legs.

A 31-pound (14-kilogram) hitchhiker payload for NASA, called Lunar Flashlight, will deploy from the Falcon 9 nearly 53 minutes after launch. The Lunar Flashlight is led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and will fly itself to a looping halo orbit around the moon. Its mission will test a laser system to shine into eternally dark craters near the lunar poles. The spacecraft will measure the light reflected off the lunar surface, revealing the composition and quantity of water ice and other molecules hidden on dark crater floors.

SpaceX set to launch two spacecraft to the Moon tonight
ispace is seeking to become the first private company to successfully land on the Moon.

Eric Berger - 11/30/2022, 6:49 PM

It has been a busy second half of the year for the Moon. Since late June, three US rockets have launched payloads to the Moon, and one more is set for early Friday morning.

Across these four launches—two on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, one on Rocket Lab's Electron, and one on NASA's Space Launch System—there have been a total of 15 spacecraft sent to fly by the Moon, enter orbit, or land there. The most notable of these, of course, is NASA's Orion spacecraft, which is due to return to Earth on December 11.

This represents a remarkable renaissance in lunar exploration. Consider that, from 1973 to 2022, NASA and the United States sent a total of 15 spacecraft to the Moon over a period of five decades. Now, thanks to a mix of commercial, academic, and government payloads, US rockets will launch 15 spacecraft to the Moon in about five months.
...
As busy as this period has been for the Moon, there is much more to come. During the first half of 2023, two commercial US companies—Intuitive Machines and Astrobotic—are expected to attempt landings on the Moon for NASA. India, Japan, and possibly even Russia also plan to launch missions to the Moon in 2023.

NASA Astronaut Anne McClain

The main engine on the first mission is a repurposed Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System engine that has flown in space before.
This engine provides 25.7 kN, enough to lift a van, and can swivel in pitch and yaw.
Eight thrusters are placed as a backup and provide 490 N each – enough to lift 50 kg on Earth. These are fixed at the bottom of the Service Module to provide orbit corrections and as a backup to the main engine.

The propellant is provided by four 2000-liter tanks with 1-cm thick walls inside the service module: mixed oxides of nitrogen (MON) as oxidiser and monomethyl hydrazine (MMH) as fuel. The tanks will hold the fuel at a pressure of 25 bar with a total capacity of nine tonnes of fuel. Helium from two tanks push the propellants into the engines.

HAKUTO-R Mission 1 delay might be a few days at least, based on initial movements of fairing recovery ship Doug.

Vessel appears to have left its holding point and is heading west towards Florida at 9 knots.

The ship being recalled to Port would typically mean a longer or undetermined delay, which makes waiting at sea unproductive.

Add at ~2.5 days of travel time to return to Florida and sail back to the LZ.
