NASA to decide soon whether flying drone will launch with Mars 2020 rover
March 15, 2018

Testing of a lightweight robotic helicopter designed to fly in the alien atmosphere of Mars has produced encouraging results in recent months, and NASA officials expect to decide soon whether the aerial drone will accompany the agency’s next rover to the red planet set for liftoff in 2020.

Engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have worked on the helicopter design for several years, modifying principles used in drones that fly in Earth’s atmosphere for the more challenging conditions at Mars. The atmospheric pressure on Mars is less than 1 percent that of Earth, and the Martian gravity field is about three-eighths as strong as it is on Earth.

Jim Watzin, director of NASA’s robotic Mars exploration program at the agency’s headquarters, said last month that an engineering model of the helicopter has completed 86 minutes of flying time in a test chamber configured to simulate the Martian atmosphere.

“The system has been built, it’s been ground tested, and then we put it into a chamber that was backfilled at Mars atmosphere (conditions),” Watzin said Feb. 20 in a presentation to the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group, a panel of scientists that assists NASA in planning Mars missions. “Some parts were removed from the helicopter to compensate for the 1g (gravity) field to get the proper relationship of mass and acceleration at Mars, and we did controlled takeoffs, slewing, translations, hovers and controlled landings in the chamber. We’ve done that multiple times.”

The helicopter weighs about 4 pounds, or 1.8 kilograms, on Earth. An internal battery is capable of powering the drone for flights lasting between 90 seconds and 2 minutes — enough time to travel up to 1,000 feet, or 300 meters — and solar panels can recharge the battery for subsequent flights, Watzin said.

Meanwhile, back at the port:

Zitat von Teslarati, May 15
SpaceX’s first launched and landed Falcon 9 Block 5 booster has returned to port after a handful of days at sea, hopefully marking the beginning of a long and storied future of commercial missions. The booster – numbered B1046 – appears to be in extraordinarily good shape, more or less unscathed after a relatively high-energy reentry. Photographer Tom Cross documented the historic return in person at Port Canaveral.

Traveling 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) per second, Block 5 eventually completed a soft landing 500 miles off the Florida coast on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You. The 25th successful Falcon 9 booster recovery, B1046 marked that historic achievement in proper style, dressed with large, black sections of the new SpaceX-developed thermal protection system, among dozens of other major improvements included in the launch vehicle’s “Block” upgrade.

SpaceX means to do an extremely thorough disassembly and analysis of B1046 in order to (hopefully) validate many thousands of hours of design, engineering, modeling, and testing. If those reviews are promising, it’s extremely likely that B1046 will be reassembled and flown many more times.

Nochmals zum "Starman" zurückgeblendet. Heute ist der 146. Geburtstag von Bertrand Russell.

Zitat von Art. 'Russell Teekanne'

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russells_Teekanne

Die Stelle im Essay "Is there a God?" von 1952 lautet im Original wie folgt:

Zitat
If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time.

http://russell.mcmaster.ca/cpbr11p69.pdf

OneSpace Technologies conducted the first private rocket launch in Chinese history this week, firing off the 30-foot (9 meter) OS-X from a platform in northwest China on Thursday, according to CNN.

The rocket reportedly reached an altitude of 25 miles (40 kilometers) and traveled some 170 miles (273 km) from the launch pad. The end goal is to be able to charge less than $10,000 a kilogram for cargo, part of an overall push from Beijing to encourage the growth of private space firms that can operate separately from the ambitious China National Space Administration but will also coordinate on some research and development projects if need be.
... [A]ccording to the Verge, OS-X is only capable of carrying 220 pounds into orbit—a drop in the bucket compared to the Falcon 9's 50,000+ pound capacity. It also uses solid rocket fuel, meaning components can’t be reused after launch.

...
Das GRACE-FO Projekt wird in den USA unter der Leitung der NASA Earth Science Division (ESD) innerhalb des NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) und des Earth Systematic Missions Program Office am Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) durchgeführt. Dem Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) wurde dabei die Verantwortung für die Realisierung des GRACE-FO Projekts übertragen.

Elon Musk, andere Baustelle.

Elon Musk’s Boring Company approved to build high-speed transit between downtown Chicago and O’Hare Airport

Zitat von The Verge, 13 June 2018
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the selection of Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build and operate a multi-billion dollar rapid transit link between O’Hare International Airport and the city’s downtown.

The company plans to transport passengers between O’Hare and Block 37 in the Loop in approximately 12 minutes each way — typically a 40 minute trip via the city’s Blue Line — by utilizing electric vehicles that run through new twin underground tunnels. The project will be funded entirely by the company with no taxpayer subsidy.

But whether or not he‘ll need to sell more flamethrowers to raise the funds isn‘t clear: under the deal, Musk would front the construction costs and then pocket all the revenue from the system’s transit fees and any money generated by advertisements, including in-car shopping sales. In other words, Musk intends to fund a massive infrastructure project in part with money from people buying stuff like headphones during a 12-minute trip (most likely using in-vehicle touchscreens). Sources tell the Chicago Tribune that the entire project should cost less than $1 billion.

Allerdings noch kein Hyperloop.

Zitat
Now the question surrounding the Boring Company will shift from “where” to “how.” Musk held a town hall meeting in LA recently where he laid down several markers: tickets would be as low as $1 per person; the dirt removed from underground would be repurposed and sold as Lego-like bricks; and he hopes to begin offering free rides through his test tunnel in LA later this year.

What the Chicago project won’t include, most likely, will be the hyperloop. Musk has said he hopes to connect New York City to Washington, DC, via the supersonic transportation system, and has received tactic approval for the project from the Trump administration. Of course, transportation experts question whether tunnels are really an answer to the quandary of traffic congestion and overcapacity, in addition to questioning Musk’s claims that he can dig tunnels faster and at a fraction of the cost of traditional boring technology.

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has ordered the creation of a new military branch, adding the "Space Force" to the Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

"It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space, we must have American dominance in space. Very importantly I'm hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces, that is a big statement," Trump said at a meeting of the National Space Council on Monday. "We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the space force, separate but equal, it is going to be something."

Trump has previously said that he included a Space Force as part of his national space strategy but also said in March that he not really serious about the idea.

Zitat von Spaceflight Now, July 22, 2018
An upgraded model of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket fired into orbit early Sunday from Florida’s Space Coast, hoisting a record-setting 7.8-ton (nearly 7.1-metric ton) communications satellite for Telesat toward its planned perch more than 22,000 miles over the equator.

The first stage accomplished a pinpoint landing nearly nine minutes into the mission, descending to SpaceX’s drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” parked in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Florida, and notching the company’s 26th successful rocket recovery. SpaceX is expected to bring the rocket back to Cape Canaveral for inspections, and will likely re-fly the booster on a future mission.

The enhanced version of the Falcon 9, known as Block 5, launched for the first time May 11. Since then, SpaceX has launched three rockets with a mix of upgraded Block 5-generation upper stages and re-flown earlier-generation first stage boosters.

The launch of Telstar 19 VANTAGE was the second time SpaceX has flown an “all-Block 5” Falcon 9 rocket, which features improvements in performance and reusability.

SpaceX ground crews at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California are readying another Falcon 9 Block 5 launcher for liftoff at 4:39 a.m. PDT (7:39 a.m. EDT; 1139 GMT) Wednesday with 10 Iridium voice and data relay satellites.

Fast.

SpaceX Re-Launches 'Block 5' Rocket for 1st Time, Nails Landing Again

The two-stage "Block 5" Falcon 9 launched at 1:18 a.m. EDT (0518 GMT) today (Aug. 7) from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, successfully lofting an Indonesian telecommunications satellite to orbit. Less than 9 minutes after liftoff, the rocket's first stage came back to Earth for a vertical touchdown on SpaceX's "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship, which was stationed a few hundred miles off the Florida coast.

The landing was the second for this particular first stage, which also pulled one off on May 11 during the first-ever flight of a Block 5 Falcon 9.

Today's launch lofted the Merah Putih satellite to a high geostationary transfer orbit. The spacecraft — whose name translates as "red and white," a reference to the colors of the Indonesian flag — will become part of the network run by PT Telkom Indonesia, the nation's largest telecommunications provider.

https://spacenews.com/first-spacex-crew-...et-for-january/

Zitat
In a Nov. 21 statement, NASA said the Falcon 9 launch of the Crew Dragon spacecraft on a mission designated Demo-1 is scheduled for Jan. 7 from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A, the former Apollo and shuttle pad that SpaceX has renovated to support launches of its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy vehicles, in particular crewed Falcon 9 missions.

However, in a Nov. 24 tweet, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine cautioned that the date announced by the agency is not firm yet, but was announced now in order to provide sufficient time for international media to apply for credentials to attend the launch. “There are reviews in [December] to decide configuration, waivers and date,” he said, adding outside factors, including launch range availability and other activities on the International Space Station, could also affect that date.

If that flight is successful, it will be followed in June by a crewed test flight, called Demo-2, where NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will fly the Crew Dragon to the ISS. Between Demo-1 and Demo-2, SpaceX plans to perform an in-flight abort test where a Crew Dragon will use its abort system to jettison from a Falcon 9 vehicle after liftoff.
