Neuralink, an Elon Musk-owned company that develops brain chip technology, has attracted controversy once more. Animal trials of the brain chips have been linked to the deaths of 15 monkeys used in experimentation, with only seven said to have survived.
These allegations come from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), which says it has discovered this through over 700 pages of documents acquired through the University of California Davis. The apparent deaths span 2017 to 2020, which if true, would explain why human experimentation was pushed back two years from its projected date.
The allegations come from reports in Business Insider and the New York Post. The sources say that monkeys used in animal trials of the Neuralink chips - which are apparently threaded into their brains - undergo "extreme suffering". Both physical and neurological side effects are reported, ranging from brain haemorrhaging to self-harming behaviour. In one instance, a monkey was found to have missing fingers and toes, "possibly from self-mutilation or some other unspecified trauma". Others are reported to have died of infection as a result of poor care after the chip was inserted.

The nonprofit — which opposes the use of animals in medical experiments — says that the team “failed to provide dying monkeys with adequate veterinary care, used an unapproved substance known as ‘BioGlue’ that killed monkeys by destroying portions of their brains, and failed to provide for the psychological well-being of monkeys assigned to the experiment.”
A tweet from Neuralink calls that description “misleading” and lacking context. It says that several animals with a “wide range of pre-existing conditions unrelated to our research” were euthanized so that researchers could practice the implant surgery on cadavers, and six more were euthanized because of infections related to the implant or a complication involving BioGlue, a widely used surgical adhesive. (An internal email references necropsy reports for 23 animals in total, plus 10 living test subjects that were either shipped to Neuralink or removed from the project.)
All animal work done at UC Davis was approved by their Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as mandated by federal law, and all medical and post-surgical support, including endpoint decisions, were overseen by their dedicated and skilled veterinary staff,” Neuralink says.
Neuralink called itself “absolutely committed to working with animals in the most humane and ethical way possible.” The company also said it moved its test animals to its own facility in 2020 to improve their standard of living beyond a federally mandated minimum, working with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors and receiving accreditation from the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International.

But a geomagnetic storm triggered by a solar flare led to the destruction of at least 38 of those satellites. The solar flare sent a burst of radiation into the solar system, causing Earth’s atmosphere to warm and swell, leading to more atmospheric drag working against satellites in low Earth orbit.
The 49 Starlink satellites that launched Feb. 3 were especially at risk from the geomagnetic storm because they were flying so close to Earth, at about half the altitude of the International Space Station.

Das ist sowieso so eine St.-Nimmerleinstag-Mission. 2011, als die Mars-Sonde Phobos-Grunt nicht die Umlaufbahn erreichte und im Stillen Ozean endete, war der Starttermin schon auf 2018 vorgerückt. Danach sind alle russischen Planetenmissionen erst einmal vertagt worden.
Das ist aber nicht die einzig betroffene. Lt. Aussage von Roskosmos-Chef Rogozin heute abend in der Sendung "Соловьев Live"/Solowjew Live soll das deutsche Röntgenteleskop auf dem Weltraumobservatorium Spektr-RG, das vom Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik in Köln betrieben wird, ebenfalls abgeschaltet werden, auf Betreiben des Deutschen Luft- und Raumfahrtzentrums. Das Spektr-RG kreist seit Oktober 2019 im 6-monatigen Rhythmus um den L2-Punkt des Erde-Mond-Systems (ja: wie das JWST) und das eROSITA ist das Hauptinstrument. Die Sonde verfügt über ein zweites, wesentlich leistungsschwächeres russisches Röntgen-Telskop, das ART-XC, das zur Auffindung von Strahlenausbrüchen gedacht ist, die beim Sturz von interstellarer Materie auf schwarze Löcher entsteht. eROSITA sollte während der 7-jährigen Betriebszeit insgesamt acht komplette Himmseldurchmusterungen durchführen und dabei 100.000 einzelne Galaxien und 3 Millionen aktive galaktische Zentren erfassen. Durch den Abgleich der Positionsdaten hat man sich Aufschlüsse auf die Verteilung dunkler Materie (die sich ja nur durch Schwerkraft bemerkbar macht) über eine Distanz von hunderten von Millionen Lichtjahren erhofft.

The Artemis I Moon rocket is getting closer to rolling out of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the first time.
The first two of 20 platforms surrounding the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft that allow work on the integrated system inside the building were retracted for roll out to Launch Complex 39B. Teams retracted the platforms, which move like hydraulic kitchen drawers, near the launch abort system on the Orion spacecraft in anticipation of the roll.
Teams are continuing to install instrumentation on the SLS’s twin solid rocket boosters inside the VAB. Thousands of sensors and special instruments will monitor the rocket and spacecraft as they roll out for the first time on March 17 and make the four-mile journey to Launch Complex 39B, arriving on March 18. Engineers will capture as much data as possible on the performance of all the systems that are part of the rocket, spacecraft, ground systems used for rollout, and on the pad for propellant loading and other activities. Once all the rocket and spacecraft systems are inspected, the 322-foot-tall rocket will roll to the launch pad for the wet dress rehearsal test, which is scheduled to occur approximately two weeks after it arrives to 39B.
An #ISS orbit correction maneuver is scheduled for March 11, 19:15 UTC with the help of the #ProgressMS18 engines in preparation for the departure of #SoyuzMS19 and arrival of #SoyuzMS21. The station’s orbit altitude will be increased for 800 m.
