Apropos "Raumfahrt & das Jahr 2023". Ich finde gerade dies...

This is a list of fictional stories that, when composed, were set in the future, but the future they predicted is now present or past. The list excludes works that were alternate histories, which were composed after the dates they depict, alternative futures, as depicted in time travel fiction, as well as any works that make no predictions of the future, such as those focusing solely on the future lives of specific fictional characters, or works which, despite their claimed dates, are contemporary in all but name. Entries referencing the current year may be added if their month and day were not specified or have already occurred.

Virgin Orbit’s ‘Start Me Up’ mission is scheduled for liftoff at 5:16 p.m. EST (2216 GMT) Monday, Jan. 9, from Spaceport Cornwall at Newquay Airport. It will be the first orbital launch from the United Kingdom and the first commercial mission to take flight from Western Europe.

At a pre-launch media briefing in Cornwall on Sunday afternoon Dan Hart, CEO of Virgin Orbit, said; “We are looking very carefully at the readiness of everything. Right now all systems are ‘green’, the rocket was armed yesterday and we are continuing with loading fuel.”

The launch is named “Start Me Up” as a tribute to one of the most iconic British rock and roll bands of all time, the Rolling Stones. The hit song debuted on their 1981 album Tattoo You and was later released on the Forty Licks compilation by Virgin Records in 2002. All of Virgin Orbit’s launches have been named to celebrate iconic moments in Virgin’s long musical history.

Virgin Orbit has five launches under its belt to date, all of which have lifted off from the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. The first mission, a test flight that launched in May 2020, failed but the most recent four have all been successful, deploying a total of 33 satellites into orbit.

Kommentar von den billigen Plätzen im Livestream: "Only the British could make a space launch boring."

I'll never stop!" Und wir wissen ja, dass die Götter solche Wetten gerne annehmen.

Und dann heißt es im Refrain auch noch "You make a grown man cry..."

TAMPA, Fla. — OneWeb is now just two launches away from being able to provide broadband globally after SpaceX sent its latest batch of satellites to orbit Jan. 9.

The British operator has confirmed contact with all 40 satellites that launched aboard a Falcon 9 at 11:50 p.m. Eastern from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida.

OneWeb said it now has 542 of 648 satellites in its proposed low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, although its latest batch and another that SpaceX launched in December are still making their way to their final destinations to start operations.

It will take about 100 days from launch for both batches of satellites to be ready to start providing services, according to OneWeb.

The operator said it is currently providing connectivity solutions via distribution partners in Alaska, Canada, the United Kingdom, Greenland and the wider Arctic area.

The latest satellites will help extend its reach into Southern Europe, the United States, North Africa, the Middle East, Japan, Australia, and India.

OneWeb has said it only needs 588 satellites to provide global, high-speed broadband in places it has regulatory approval to operate. The remaining 60 spacecraft will serve as a mix of in-orbit and ground spares.

SpaceX and New Space India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of India’s space agency, are slated to perform one launch each early this year to enable OneWeb to provide global coverage.

Virgin Orbit.

Zitat
Even before Monday’s launch failure, Virgin Orbit’s finances were dismal. Some financial analysts believe the company will run out of money in March.

3:32 PM · Jan 10, 2023

A brief history of Virgin Orbit

Virgin Orbit started as an idea in 2011 by Sir Richard Branson as an offshoot of his Virgin Galactic space business, with the goal of fully utilizing the White Knight aircraft. Eventually it was decided the company, formally created in 2017, would use its own aircraft, a modified Boeing 747-400 named Cosmic Girl, as a platform from which to drop and launch small rockets.

Lacking revenue of its own, Virgin Orbit was funded for most of a decade by the Virgin Group, the multinational company that owns and operates Branson's various businesses, as well as an Emirati state-owned holding company, Mubadala Investment Company.

Independent estimates suggest that, over that time, Virgin Orbit spent as much as $1 billion to develop and test its LauncherOne rocket and air-launch system. The company made its first successful launch in January 2021 and has averaged one mission every six months since then.

An obvious question is this: With such high development costs, and a low cadence for a rocket that sells for $12 million per launch, how can Virgin Orbit be financially sustainable?

In 2021 the company answered its short-term cash needs by going public, merging with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. However, funds raised from this merger were far less than anticipated. Upon announcing its intent to go public, Virgin Orbit said it anticipated raising $383 million from the proceeds of the SPAC transaction; however, it raised just $68 million from this process and instead had to turn to private investments for an additional $160 million to keep operating.

So far, in 2022, the company has reported a net loss of $139.5 million through September 30, with "cash and cash equivalents" on hand of $71.2 million. Financial results for the fourth quarter of 2022 should be published about one month from today.

There are ominous signs about the company's financial state, however. Here's what we know about the company's efforts to raise funding since September 30, 2022:

Nov. 4: Branson invests an additional $25 million in Virgin Orbit via an unsecured convertible note.
Nov. 7: During its quarterly earnings call, the company says it will be "opportunistic in the capital markets to fund our growth." Previously officials had said they were seeking to raise additional funds via capital raises, and this confirmed that.
Nov. 23: On the Wednesday afternoon before the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, Virgin Orbit announces a "cessation" of these fundraising efforts. "Due to current market conditions, the Company has elected not to proceed with an offering. Any future capital raising transactions will depend upon future market conditions," the company stated.
Dec. 19: Branson invests an additional $20 million in Virgin Orbit. Significantly, this note is secured by the entirety of the company's assets. As part of the terms of the convertible note, "The Company and the Guarantors have granted a first-priority security interest on substantially all of their respective assets, including all aircrafts, aircraft engines (including spare aircraft parts) and related assets."

Financial industry sources said the issuance of a secured note is a red flag, because it will make additional fundraising much more difficult. Why invest in Virgin Orbit if all of the company's hard assets are secured by another creditor?

The timing here is concerning. Effectively, it appears that after Virgin Orbit failed to raise equity capital in November, the company pledged all of its assets to Branson after exhausting its other options. Branson, certainly, could add more funding in 2023. However as an economic recession looms and threatens Branson's other Virgin properties, it is not clear that he has the ability or willingness to continue to stem the flow at Virgin Orbit.

ABL Space Systems is preparing for the maiden flight of its RS1 rocket. The launch vehicle will lift off from the Pacific Spaceport Center in Alaska and will carry two satellites for Omniteq (Varisat-1A and Varisat-1B).

ABL Space Systems (ABL) was founded in 2017. The company still keeps in secret what the ABL and RS1 acronyms stand for. Based in El Segundo, California, ABL already occupies several facilities with end-to-end manufacturing capabilities in-house. The company has two test sites, the first one is located at the Mojave Air and Spaceport and has two active engine test bays, and the second one is located at Edwards Air Force Base and is used for general testing.

On its maiden launch, the RS1 rocket will carry two satellites (Varisat-1A and Varisat-1B) for Omniteq to their designated orbit with a 350 km apogee, a 200 km perigee, and an inclination of 87.3 degrees. Varisat-1A&B are technology demonstration satellites that are composed of two identical 6U CubeSats. The total mass of each satellite is about 11 kg.

The spacecraft will be demonstrating a new HF marine data communications capability. The satellites are gravity gradient and aerodynamic drag stabilized and have six deployable solar array panels. There is no propulsion on the satellites.

In January 2022, ABL lost an upper stage during a static firing at the Mojave Air and Spaceport, which was caused by a hard start of the E2 vacuum engine and delayed the vehicle’s first flight. After this accident, the company was able to build the stage in only three weeks and proceeded with its testing.

ABL’s RS1 is a ground-launched small-lift rocket consisting of two stages. When fully integrated, RS1 has a length of about 26.8 m (88 ft) and a diameter of 1.8 m (6 ft). The rocket’s design is deliberately simple, which allows the company to rapidly produce reliable, low-cost, and simple in operation launch vehicles. The company’s philosophy is perfectly described by the slogan on its website “Even rockets can be simple”.

One interesting thing about RS1 is that all its stages are sized to fit in standard shipping containers that could be delivered to the desired launch site. For instance, the first stage can be shipped in a 53′ container, whereas the second stage and fairing – in 20′ containers. Moreover, the only piece of ground infrastructure required at the launch site is a flat concrete pad with dimensions of 150′ x 50′. With this approach, the company will be able to provide responsive launch services by activating launch sites quickly, at a low cost, and with a small team.

The vehicle’s structures are entirely metallic and made of high-strength aluminum alloy. The propellant tank architecture represents a common dome and yields minimized structural mass. The vehicle’s dry weight is about 3,200 kg (7,000 lb), while its gross lift-off weight is about 6,800 kg (15,000 Ib). RS1 is capable of placing 1,350 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO) and 970 kg to a 500 km Sun-Synchronous orbit (SSO).

The first stage has a length of 15 m (50 ft) and uses nine E2 Sea Level engines that work on liquid oxygen (LOx) as the oxidizer and kerosene as the propellant.

E2 engines are the main propulsion source for RS1 that was designed and developed in-house, specifically for this vehicle. They are gas generator cycle, turbopump-fed engines running on kerosene (RP-1 or Jet-A) and liquid oxygen (LOx). The E2 engine is capable of producing 12,100 Ibf at sea level and 13,000 in a vacuum.

The company combines a traditional approach (forging and machining method) and additive manufacturing for building different components of the rocket. For example, 3D printing with the following post-processing is used for components that require complex internal geometry and fluid passageways (e.g., a thrust chamber, an injector, and turbopumps). The E2 thrust chamber is made of high-performance nickel alloy using a direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) method. In this process, the metal powder is melted by the scanning of a high-power laser beam. It has high detail resolution due to the small powder diameter (20 um) and is widely used for the fabrication of aerospace parts for high heat applications. At the same time, the company uses well-established forging and machining methods for components that are less complex.

The second stage has a length of 1.6 m (5.4 ft) and accommodates one E2 vacuum engine that also runs on kerosene and LOx. It can relight to deliver payloads to their designated orbits.

Update.

Early in today's flight, all nine of RS1's E2 engines shut down simultaneously. RS1 impacted the pad and was destroyed.

As expected in this scenario, there is damage to the launch facility. All personnel are safe, and fires have subsided. We'll plan our return to flight after investigations are complete. Thanks to our stakeholders and the space community for the expressions of support.

NASA press briefing underway. Roscosmos Sergei Krikalev says the Soyuz MS-22 will remain on the station for “several” additional months, exact extension length to be determined. No changes to Crew-6 crew assignments, but date TBD.

Krikalev says ground tests replicated the damage seen on the Soyuz radiator, leading them to conclude it was a micrometeoroid impact that caused the leak. Still, have “double-checked, triple-checked” radiator on Soyuz MS-23 before launch; no issues found.

Soyuz MS-23 will launch without a crew but have some cargo for the station. Some cargo will be returned on the damaged Soyuz MS-22, landing in Kazakhstan.

Soyuz MS-22 will return “a week or two” after MS-23 docks, Krikalev said.

NASA’s Montalbano says he is not calling Soyuz MS-23 a “rescue” Soyuz; crew is safe, ISS is protected as much as we can. Prefer to think of this as a replacement Soyuz. (Krikalev says he agrees with that terminology.)

Krikalev says it isn’t feasible to repair the Soyuz: not a convenient place to reach and trying to repair hole and refill coolant would be very difficult and risky. Much less risk to just replace the vehicle.

Zur Abwechslung mal was zu Starlink.

Zitat von Announcement: January 10, 2023 at 5:11 pm EST
NSF and SpaceX Finalize Radio Spectrum Coordination Agreement

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and SpaceX have finalized a radio spectrum coordination agreement to limit interference from the company’s Starlink satellites to radio astronomy assets operating between 10.6 and 10.7 GHz. The agreement, detailed in a statement released by NSF today, ensures that Starlink satellite network plans will meet international radio astronomy protection standards, and protect NSF-funded radio astronomy facilities, including the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and the Green Bank Observatory (GBO). The agreement will also positively impact collaborations and cooperation between SpaceX and NSF’s NOIRLab.

“This agreement echoes protections in place in the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) that protect the radio spectrum from terrestrial based radio interference. These combined efforts, of land and sky, will safeguard the scientific research of astronomers for generations to come,” said Jim Jackson, GBO Director. GBO is located in the heart of the NRQZ, which was established in 1958 to protect federal radio observations conducted in a 14,000 square mile region spanning West Virginia, and parts of Virginia and Maryland.

NRAO has been collaborating with SpaceX since 2021 to test the impact of Starlink satellites on radio astronomy observations conducted between 10.6 and 10.7 GHz. Additional tests have monitored the level of impact in the 10.7-12.27 GHz and 14.0-14.5 GHz ranges. The results have provided scientists with a better understanding of the actual and potential impacts of satellites on research, and paved the way for this agreement.

In the past two years, NSF has funded the efforts of the National Radio Dynamic Zone (NRDZ) and Spectrum Innovation Initiative, which are collaborations created by multiple organizations, including NRAO, to define and eventually monitor the NRDZ. “NRAO is dedicated to the protection of radio astronomical observations in the decades ahead, which will be challenging. Experiments in coordinated spectrum use like the ones that we are performing with SpaceX will provide a strong foundation for the type of testing and analysis that could occur in an NRDZ,” said Chris De Pree NRDZ Project Director at NRAO.

The launch was delayed from Monday night be bad weather at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Last night, SpaceX scrubbed a launch attempt to evaluate data from the Falcon 9 rocket's second stage.
The launch from California is now scheduled to occur about four hours after SpaceX plans to launch a Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
