Starship Flight 4. Analyse des Endes von IFT-3.

Perigee@Orbital_Perigee
tl;dr: nominal ascent, 6 engines cut early during BBB commanding early shutdown, locking them out, the remaining 7 middle RCs attempted ignition for LB, ice in tanks blocked filters and thus prop flow, hard start, two engines managed to ignite, cut out, blew at 462m, ship was fine up till reentry, roll thrusters were blocked, could not compensate (no mention of payload bay outgassing)

For F4, SHIP LANDING BURN tons of hardware and software upgrades (expected), jettisoning HSR after BBB (?!?), additional tank baffles, etc etc

3/ The briefing is now getting underway

4/ Free begins by noting they conducted the agency flight test readiness review on Wednesday where the whole team was able to discuss the helium leak on the Starliner service module and review the evaluation and acceptance for the affected systems.

5/ Next, Stich says during the review on Wednesday, they also discussed "a potential parachute crossover topic from a Blue Origin flight that occurred recently."
This is likely the parachute that didn't fully deploy during Blue Origin's recent crewed suborbital flight.

6/ Elaborating on the parachute, Stich says Starliner uses a similar parachute system to Blue Origin's New Shepard capsule.
He said they went through and check the data on Starliner to make sure that "we had good separation from that particular parachute that didn't fully inflate."

/ Weigel says the ISS mission management team readiness review was held on Thursday and everyone polled 'go' for Starliner to proceed with the mission.
She added that a pump on the ISS that helps process urine down to drinking water failed earlier than hoped, so they pulled some crew suitcases from the Starliner cargo to make space for the new pump.

8/ Weigel says the first spacewalk of the summer is coming up around June 13.

9/ Fincke says Butch and Suni have "every confidence" in our rocket... in our spacecraft and in our operation teams and leadership management teams."

10/ Nappi says Starliner began powering up this morning at about 3:30 a.m. EDT (0730 UTC).
"This is a test flight. We know we're going to learn some things. We're going to improve and that improvement starts with Starliner-1."

11/ Wentz says the ULA team comes in at 1 a.m. EDT (0500 UTC) to begin working towards the 12:25 p.m. EDT (1625 UTC) launch.

13/ Assuming a June 1 launch, the earliest landing would be around Monday, June 10, with an undock around 5:50 a.m. EDT (0950 UTC).

14/ Weigel says if for some reason the Russian Progress cargo vehicle were to have an issue and need to free fly around the ISS beyond the launch time of Starliner, they would stand down to assess.

15/ Regarding the Blue Origin parachute, Stich says the cutters that cut the reefing line to allow the New Shepard parachutes to deploy, had an issue on one of them.
He said the test data on the Starliner cutters have been collected on around 160 times, giving them good justification that they have separation between Blue Origin's and Boeing's spacecraft.

16/ Addressing a question about the helium leak tank, Stich says they saw a leak rate of about 7 pounds per square inch per minute at the pad. Inside the VIF, they saw the leak increase to about 70-80 pounds per minute, which is "about the size of a softball in terms of volume."
Nappi said there's about 50 pounds of helium onboard and "if this leak was left open, it would lose about half about a pound a day. So, there's plenty of margin leftover."

17/ Nappi says they open up the manifolds around T-4 hours. He says they spent the last 10 days or so working on contingency cases.
Fincke added that the crew also trained for the contingency scenarios as well while in Houston.

18/ Stich says they could manage "about roughly double the leak rate" and if it were to go beyond that, they would further assess.
Noted that they wouldn't launch with an isolated manifold since it would impact the launch abort system engines.

19/ Weigel says the replacement urine pump bag when fully packed is about 150 pounds. Some of the cargo being removed includes clothes for Butch and Suni and also some crew-specific hygiene equipment. The ISS has some generic hygiene equipment for them to use.

20/ Nappi says they have about 20 percent of the certification process left to get to the Starliner-1 mission. They would need to get through the work by about November to be able to potentially launch in the spring. *

21/21 That will wrap up today's briefing. Launch remains Saturday, June 1, at 12:25:40 EDT (1624:40 UTC). Our live coverage will begin at 7:40 a.m. EDT (1140 UTC) on YouTube.

Zitat
TOKYO, June 1 (Reuters) - Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa cancelled his "dearMoon" mission, which the project said would have been the first private flight around the moon, the mission announced on Saturday.
The team had originally aimed to make the circumlunar flight with celebrities on board by the end of last year but that became "unfeasible", the mission said in a statement on its website.
"Without clear schedule certainty in the near-term, it is with a heavy heart that Maezawa made the unavoidable decision to cancel the project," it said. "To all who have supported this project and looked forward to this endeavor, we sincerely appreciate it and apologize for this outcome."

In a separate post on the mission website, Maezawa suggested the cause of the cancellation was uncertainty over the project development, saying he signed the contract in 2018 based on the assumption the launch would come by the end of 2023. "It's a developmental project so it is what it is, but it is still uncertain as to when Starship can launch," Maezawa said.
"I can't plan my future in this situation, and I feel terrible making the crew members wait longer, hence the difficult decision to cancel at this point in time."

Elon Musk's SpaceX named Maezawa, the colourful founder of Japanese online fashion store Zozo Inc (3092.T), its first private passenger in 2018. Three years later he was the first private passenger to visit the International Space Station in more than a decade, launching on a Soyuz rocket. In 2022, Maezawa announced that K-pop star TOP and DJ Steve Aoki would be among the eight crew members he planned to take on the dearMoon mission. In November he said the flyby mission would be delayed until this year or later.

Notice of Project Cancellation

In 2018, Yusaku Maezawa announced dearMoon, the world’s first civilian circumlunar voyage aboard SpaceX’s space vehicle, Starship. The plan had included artists from around the world who would participate in the project to share the invaluable experience in space with the rest of the world. Arrangements were being made with SpaceX to target the launch by the end of 2023.

Unfortunately, however, launch within 2023 became unfeasible, and without clear schedule certainty in the near-term, it is with a heavy heart that Maezawa made the unavoidable decision to cancel the project. To all who have supported this project and looked forward to this endeavor, we sincerely appreciate it and apologize for this outcome.

Although dearMoon is cancelled, Maezawa and dearMoon crew members will continue tochallenge themselves in their respective fields.

We will hold deep respect for SpaceX as they continue to venture into uncharted territories, while we ourselves will move on to the next challenge.

Just as teams were exiting the terminal count, there was a hold called and the clock was stopped at T-00:03:50. Because this is a mission to the International Space Station, it was an instantaneous launch window, so there will not be a launch today.

We're standing by for additional information on the reason for the hold and when NASA, Boeing and ULA will attempt to launch again. The next opportunity available on the range calendar is 12:03 p.m. EDT (1603 UTC). We will wait to see if they are able to utilize that opportunity.

2/ Steve Stich begins his comments saying that the helium leak the were tracking on the Starliner’s service module was about half of what it was in the Vertical Integration Facility. Says it wouldn’t have been an issue for launch.

3/ Steve says the team “took the right steps. We weren’t ready to go today.”

4/ Boeing’s Mark Nappi said they were able to fix the suit fan issue ahead of the launch attempt and are working in a 24-hour turnaround workflow.
Says they’ll launch when ULA is ready to go.

5/ ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno says they were working two ground issues, the second of which requires three computers to be in synch to enable the launch sequencer.
Two worked as expected, one did not.

6/ Bruno said they need to finish de-tanking the rocket before they are able to assess the computer up close.
Says it’s likely a hardware problem with a computer that had a problematic card. If the fix is simple, they preserve a launch attempt tomorrow. If not, they’ll look at backup dates on either the 5th or 6th.

7/ Bruno said the first ground issue concerned the same computer rack, but different cards.
He said they won’t know if there’s a connection between the two events until they get hands on.

8/ Bruno says they need to get the launch team back on console by 12:30 am Sunday morning to move forward.
Stitch says they will try to get information out tonight on an opportunity tomorrow, if it’s available.

9/ If they do need to go beyond June 6, they would need to roll back to the VIF to replace the flight termination system batteries, which would add about 10 days to the timeline.

10/ If the mission launches tomorrow, it would dock on Monday, June 3.

11/ Bruno says a key difference between this mission and others is that this was an instantaneous launch window. Had they had more time to work it, they may have found an additional way to move forward. But there wasn’t enough wiggle room on this flight.

12/ Bruno says they’ve seen card failures in the past, but they are rare.

13/ Nappi says besides the fan issue, Starliner performed as expected today.

14/14 If they launch June 5, it’s at 10:52 am ET, docking 24 hrs later.
June 6 would be at 10:29 am ET, docking about 24 hrs later.
That concludes today’s briefing.

I’m listening to the NASA press conference for today’s #Starliner CFT-1 launch attmept and I’m very happy to hear how much detail @torybruno is providing on the launch sequencer. It’s basically a card inside a rack computer at the pad. There’s three redundant computers that all need to be working and agreeing in order to command the launch out of an abundance of safety. He says they have lots of spare parts and hopes to be able to fix whatever problem there is so they can try for tomorrow’s launch window. They have to wait until the vehicle is detanked and safed before they can get crew out there to check on the computers so we won’t know if tomorrow’s launch opportunity is an option until later this evening.

Just to be clear - this computer is on the launch tower, not on Starliner, right? Geez, Suni and Butch can't catch a break. Scrubbed due to a ULA problem, a Boeing spacecraft problem, and a GSE problem. (Although the latter is still a Boeing problem.)

This typically doesn't happen after you have done as many rehearsals as I thought they (Boeing/ULA together) had. I haven't been following closely but I assume they have done a terminal count rehearsal before with the flight hardware. This happened to SpaceX quite a few times in the early days of the F9. Config files are supposed to be treated like software and checked by multiple people...but (to be entirely honest) they are sometimes given less priority on early flights of a new configuration in terms of dotting "i"s and crossing "t"s because the high/low limits in the config files are either too conservative (leading to scrub) or unvalidated. A dry and wet dress rehearsal offers the launch team the ability to validate (and tighten) the limits if you exercise all of the countdown. Then you need to make sure you update and check-in the config file correctly. Maybe something in all that went wrong today.

Starliner won't launch on Sunday. NASA notes they are moving to the next available launch opportunities: Wednesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 6.

NASA: "NASA, Mission Partners Forego June 2 Launch of Crew Flight Test
NASA, Boeing, and ULA (United Launch Alliance) are forgoing a Crew Flight Test launch attempt Sunday, June 2, to give the team additional time to assess a ground support equipment issue at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex-41 in Florida.
Saturday’s launch was to carry NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to and from the International Space Station scrubbed due to an observation of a ground launch sequencer. The system was unsuccessful in verifying the sequencer’s necessary redundancy.
ULA will assess the ground support equipment overnight, and NASA will provide an update June 2 on next steps for the flight. The next available launch opportunities are Wednesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 6."

Chang'e 6 arrived in lunar orbit about four days after liftoff. It spent the next few weeks scrutinizing its planned landing site and gearing up for today's big event, which went according to plan: Chang'e 6's lander came down softly in Apollo Crater, leaving the mission's orbiter, with its attached Earth-reentry module, circling the moon.

The lander will spend the next few days studying its surroundings and collecting about 4.4 pounds (2 kilograms) of lunar dirt and rock. Some of these samples will be scooped from the surface and some will be dug from up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) underground, using Chang'e 6's onboard drill.

This material will then be launched into lunar orbit by a rocket that rode down with the lander. The sample container will rendezvous with the Chang'e 6 orbiter, then make the long trek back to Earth, eventually touching down here under parachutes on June 25.

NASA release:

NASA, Mission Partners Target June 5 Crew Flight Test Launch

"NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test mission teams are preparing to support a launch at 10:52 a.m. EDT Wednesday, June 5, from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on a mission of about a week to the International Space Station.

Technicians and engineers with ULA (United Launch Alliance) worked overnight and on Sunday to assess the ground support equipment at the launch pad that encountered issues during the countdown and scrubbed the June 1 launch attempt. The ULA team identified an issue with a single ground power supply within one of the three redundant chassis that provides power to a subset of computer cards controlling various system functions, including the card responsible for the stable replenishment topping valves for the Centaur upper stage. All three of these chassis are required to enter the terminal phase of the launch countdown to ensure crew safety.

On Sunday, the chassis containing the faulty ground power unit was removed, visually inspected, and replaced with a spare chassis. No signs of physical damage were observed. A full failure analysis of the power unit will be performed to better understand root cause. Meanwhile, ULA has completed functional checkouts of the new chassis and the cards, and all hardware is performing normally."

NASA announces they are moving Hubble into single-gyro mode to extend its life after one of three remaining gyros has suffered continuing problems.
10:04 PM · Jun 4, 2024

A disadvantage of this single-gyro mode: lower efficiency since it takes longer to shift from some targets, and unable to track moving objects closer than Mars.

NASA's Marc Clampin says that the change to single-gyro ops won't affect the Operations Paradigm Change Review NASA announced in March to look at lowering ops costs of Hubble and Chandra. That review is complete and being reviewed, with an update this summer.

Clampin: after reviewing commercial options for rebooting Hubble (like NASA/SpaceX study), we have elected not to pursue any at this time; concern about risks of premature loss of science. Could revisit it in the future.

Ariane 6 Maiden Flight Scheduled for 9 July

By Andrew Parsonson - June 5, 2024

The European Space Agency has announced that the maiden flight of the Ariane 6 rocket is scheduled to take place on 9 July from The Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana.

Director General Josef Aschbacher revealed the date of the maiden Ariane 6 flight during a press briefing on the first day of the ILA Berlin Air Show in Germany.

The announcement comes just three weeks after an Ariane 6 Task Force update on 21 May narrowed the launch date to the first two weeks of July. Since then, teams on the ground in French Guiana have completed a “dry run” of the launch. Completed on 31 May, the dry run confirmed that the software, commands, and data connections between the rocket and the control centre are operational.

The next major milestone expected to be completed is the Ariane 6 launch systems qualification review close-out. This will be followed by the transfer and integration of the upper composite, which includes the fairing, payloads, and launcher adapter. The final milestone to be completed before the launch countdown on 9 July is the wet dress rehearsal, which is slated for 18 June.

ESA member states agreed to fund the development of Ariane 6 in December 2014. At the time, the development of the rocket was expected to cost approximately €3.215 billion, and it was slated to be introduced in 2020. When it is finally introduced next month, four years late and over €800 million over budget (not including €350 million per year in operational subsidies), it will mark the return of sovereign European heavy-lift launch capabilities.

Starliner completed its orbital insertion burn and is on its way to chase down the International Space Station.
As noted on the loops though, the sublimator appears to be using more water than expected. They plan to take it down to 10% water remaining.
A sublimator rejects heat by using the process of sublimation, which is when a substance, such as water, changes from the solid phase directly to the vapor phase.

NASA TV broadcast notes that, although there are "a handful of cameras" onboard, Boeing isn't able to relay video until the capsule reaches the ISS.

I asked in the press conference but didn't get an explanation for why there isn't any live, or even delayed, video from Starliner post-launch.
Boeing VP Mark Nappi: "We are looking at being able to provide live feed inflight but that won't be for a couple of flights."

Flight controllers in Houston are troubleshooting a helium leak in the propulsion system on Boeing's Starliner. According to a mission commentator the crew has closed all helium manifold valves in an effort to isolate the leak. Helium provides pressure to the propulsion system, which is used for manuevering and the braking burn needed to return the astronauts to Earth. A helium leak detected prior to launch delayed the mission by several weeks but was deemed safe to fly with.
